Shott Earthworks Inc. is currently looking for an experienced HSE professional to join our team as a HSE Field Advisor. This position will be primarily working on site (rotational) in the Fort McMurray area, on a large oil sands project. Camp accommodations and fly in/fly out from Edmonton or Calgary is available.
Job Description: Field Health and Safety Coordinator
The health and safety coordinator reports directly to the Corporate HSE Manager and offers expert knowledge and skills in order to generate and promote a positive health and safety culture. This represents a key role in helping control occupational risk. This position is responsible for working directly with project supervision to ensure that all applicable safety legislation is adhered to in the field, and policies and practices are adopted, and that all customer health and safety requirements are met. This position will help to plan, implement, monitor and review the protective and preventative measures the company is required or chooses to follow, and work to minimize operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents and injuries.
Typical work activities: Work activities may vary, however tasks typically involve:
- Assisting with safety metrics and safety program development
- Suggesting changes to working practices that are safe and comply with legislation;
- Conducting site specific orientations (new hires, sub contractors, visitors etc.)
- Carrying out risk assessments and considering how risks could be reduced;
- Outlining safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards;
- Carrying out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented;
- Leading in-house training with supervisors and employees about health and safety issues and risks;
- Keeping records of inspections findings and producing reports that suggest improvements;
- Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Keeping up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all HSE legislation and any developments that affect the employer's industry;
- Attending all required training
- Mentoring crews regarding health and safety policies, practices, procedures and legislation
- Other duties as required by management to facilitate a safe work environment for employees.
Qualifications
- 2–5+ years of experience in an HSE role, preferably in civil construction or industrial environments
- Working knowledge of safety legislation (e.g., provincial OH&S regulations)
- Experience with incident investigations and safety reporting
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and in the field environment
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites
Preferred Certifications
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) or working toward designation
- COR (Certificate of Recognition) audit experience
- Standard First Aid / CPR
- WHMIS (GHS)
- Ground Disturbance Level II
- CSTS 2020 / CSO
- H2S Alive
