Position Title: Gender-Based Violence Coordinator
Home Base Yellowknife is an organization dedicated to supporting youth (12-24) in Yellowknife. Home Base Yellowknife provides housing and support to youth in Yellowknife to achieve life-long success. The organization’s vision is “No youth left out.”
Under the direction and supervision of the Associate Director, the Gender-Based Violence Coordinator will be responsible for providing services for young people who have experienced physical assault, sexual assault, harassment, threats, intimate partner violence, and other traumatic events.
This is a new position within Home Base Yellowknife, therefore, the program development process requires the person in the position to be adaptable and flexible to fulfill program funding requirements.
Responsibilities
- Able to formulate research/evidence based information into ideas for program development
- Support young people in-person after experiencing traumatic/criminal events.
- Support young people in court by guiding them in writing their victim impact statements and accompanying victims to court. Explaining court related terminology and information. Reminding clients of their subsequent court dates and times with the required information for the court hearing
- Assisting victims after court hearings with emergency shelter, clothing, food, after-school programs, and Youth center activities
- Assess the needs of the youth and make appropriate referrals to community services such as counseling
- Provide support such as transportation to required appointments
- Case management documenting youth’s current and ongoing progress
- Maintain documentation of youth’s progress
- Follow up with various community supports and services
- Inform youth on the status of their court related matters or refer them to a court-appointed liaison for support when required or appropriate.
- Support Victims of crimes from a Trauma Informed perceptive
- Able to follow the organization's policies on working with young victims
- Promotion of youth awareness of Gender-based violence and
- Creation of workshops to improve youth knowledge base pertaining to the areas of Health, Sex Education and Consent
- Any other duties or responsibilities as outlined or requested by the Associate Director
Community Partnership & Outreach
- Fostering /building relationships/partnerships with organizations for programming such as:
- Tree of Peace (particularly with their Youth Coordinator) - connect with Elders and counselors
- Native Women’s Society
- Victim Services
- Northern Mosaic
- FOXY (Fostering Open Expression among Youth)
Culturally Responsive Youth Support & System Navigation
- Provide trauma-informed support as a liaison for youth between accessing services and support responding to GBV
- Work collaboratively with the 4Y Justice program while providing a GBV lens to navigating justice systems
Program Development, Coordination & Facilitation
- Coordinate and consult with managers, program coordinators, frontline staff and counselors to better understand the needs of youths in addressing GBV
- Identify, assess for gaps, and modify the GBV program for sustainability upon piloting the program
- Create a workshop series to deliver learning and education on GBV for youth at HBYK
- Facilitate support for youth who have experienced GBV with culturally responsive and inclusive framework
- Collaborate with the training coordinator to deliver training for staff on GBV that youth experience to raise awareness and expand on trauma-informed practices in our programs at HBYK
Reporting, Evaluation & Administrative Tasks
- Develop an evaluation tool and framework based on the project deliverables to obtain continuous feedback from youth and staff for reporting and program adjustments
- Provide appropriate documentation and information to report on the progress and outcomes of the program
Qualifications
- Minimum of 19 yrs of age (required)
- Fluency in English (comprehension, written, spoken) (required)
- High School Diploma (required)
- Secondary Education, Diploma or Degree, in Youth Work, Social Work or other Human Services field (asset)
- Relevant lived experience in Human or Social Services field (will be evaluated on an individual basis) (asset)
- Experience or education in Criminal Justice (asset)
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check (required)
- Acceptable Child Protection Record Check (required)
- Current First Aid/ CPR (asset)
- Experience working with persons impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, a trauma background, and various behavioral needs (asset)
