The Education Assistant will support a diverse group of students with complex learning needs. These students include individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including those who are non-verbal and rely on alternative communication methods, as well as students impacted by trauma and requiring consistent, relationship-based support. The role also involves working closely with English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners, including newcomers, refugees, and students who are adjusting to a new country and school system. Many students may be navigating additional life challenges such as poverty, housing instability, or displacement, which can significantly impact their learning and well-being. The successful candidate will approach this work with empathy, cultural responsiveness, and an understanding of the importance of creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.
This role requires a flexible, adaptable individual who thrives in a collaborative team environment. The Education Assistant will provide targeted support in all areas of communication, including:
- Speech and language delays
- Fine motor development related to the use of speech-generating devices

This position may require the Education Assistant to provide direct personal care support to students with complex needs. Responsibilities may include:
- Supporting students during eating and mealtime routines
- Helping students with dressing tasks such as putting on coats, boots, and other outerwear
- Performing physical tasks that may involve lifting or transferring students, with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Students may exhibit a range of challenging behaviours that require proactive support and intervention. These behaviours may include:
- Aggression toward self or others (e.g., hitting, biting)
- Destructive actions (e.g., throwing objects, breaking materials)
- Disruptive responses (e.g., crying, screaming)
- Unsafe behaviours (e.g., running, limited awareness of surroundings and personal safety)

The current Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) includes lunch supervision hours, which may be subject to adjustment. This could result in a reduction of overall hours depending on scheduling and assignment needs.
