Mining Industry NL supports the growth of Newfoundland and Labrador’s mineral sector by building awareness, strengthening community connections, and supporting workforce development. Job Summary
The Opportunity
The Manager, Outreach, and Education will lead the development and delivery of the outreach and education programs, including the Mining Bright Futures STEM program. This role combines project management, curriculum-linked resource development, stakeholder engagement, and coordination of province-wide activities.
The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, and passionate about youth engagement, STEM education, and community development.
This is a full-time role, office based in St. John’s, NL. Travel within the province is required for school visits, community outreach, and industry events. Occasional evening or weekend work during major events.
Responsibilities
Program Development & Resource Creation:
- Lead the design and development of the outreach and education programs, including the Mining Bright Futures STEM program.
- Create K-12 curriculum-aligned learning resources, including activities, lesson plans, investigations and instructional materials.
- Develop the Mining Bright Future STEM activity-based resource kit, including:
- Activities, investigations and instructional plans and materials;
- Provincial rock and mineral samples;
- Equipment (e.g., mineral testing equipment);
- Supplementary learning tools (e.g., maps, posters, presentations/slide deck);
- Career awareness materials.
- Ensure all resources align with NL curriculum outcomes (i.e., Grade 4 Life Science; Grade 7 Earth’s Crust; Career Education 2202).
Project Management & Administration:
- Oversee project planning, timelines, deliverables, and reporting.
- Manage project bookkeeping, budgeting, and documentation.
- Maintain and update project communications, marketing materials and report content.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with K–12 schools, teachers, school districts, and post-secondary partners.
- Work with industry clients and chambers of commerce across NL.
- Engage Indigenous leaders and communities to ensure inclusive program delivery.
- Support the development of best practices for community engagement and workforce sustainability.
Program Delivery & Events:
- Coordinate and deliver workshops, presentations, and train‑the‑trainer sessions for teachers, students, and community partners.
- Support the planning of events, including industry and community gatherings.
- Lead the distribution of the Mining Bright Futures STEM Resource Kit to priority regions across the province.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the team and meet objectives.
Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in education from a recognized institution is essential.
- 5 years' experience in a classroom setting is preferred.
- Education and experience in earth sciences, environmental studies, geography, STEM, community development, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Experience in project management, program coordination, or curriculum development.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to translate technical concepts into accessible learning materials.
- Experience working with youth, educators, or community groups.
- Knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador’s geology, mineral resources, or mining sector (or willingness to learn).
- Ability to travel throughout the province.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities, considered an asset.
- Familiarity with NL K–12 curriculum, considered an asset.
- Event planning or workshop facilitation experience considered an asset.
