Position Summary
The Director of Business Development is responsible for leading Thompson Construction Group’s business development strategy, driving market expansion, and strengthening strategic relationships that support long-term revenue growth. This role works closely with executive leadership and operational teams to identify opportunities, develop growth strategies, and position Thompson as a leading construction partner across the Mining and Oil & Gas sectors.
The successful candidate will bring extensive industry knowledge, established client relationships, and a proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans that expand market presence, secure new opportunities, and support sustainable business growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with executive leadership and operational teams to develop and execute strategic business expansion plans aligned with company objectives.
- Lead all aspects of business development, including sales strategy, market planning, opportunity identification, forecasting, and client relationship management.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key industry decision-makers, existing clients, prospective clients, contractors, consultants, and strategic partners.
- Expand Thompson’s presence beyond its core projects in Northern Alberta by identifying and pursuing opportunities within the Mining and Oil & Gas sectors.
- Lead business development initiatives to secure new clients, increase market share, and achieve revenue growth targets.
- Manage and influence large-scale pursuits, proposals, and strategic opportunities in collaboration with estimating, operations, and project teams.
- Represent and promote the Thompson brand through industry events, client meetings, networking opportunities, and strategic partnerships.
- Assess market conditions, operational challenges, competitor activity, and emerging industry trends to identify risks and opportunities that impact company growth.
- Conduct market research, feasibility assessments, and business evaluations to enhance service offerings and identify new opportunities.
- Establish and strengthen partnerships with First Nations, local communities, and industry stakeholders to support collaborative growth opportunities.
- Provide market intelligence and strategic recommendations to executive leadership to support informed business decisions.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in business development, sales leadership, or strategic growth roles within the construction, mining, or oil & gas industries.
- Mandatory experience with the operational and market dynamics of companies involved in light and heavy civil construction, oil & gas facility construction, mining, and infrastructure development projects.
- Demonstrated success managing revenue portfolios exceeding $175 million.
- Proven track record of developing and executing strategic plans that secure new clients, expand into new markets, and deliver measurable revenue growth.
- Established network and relationships with industry stakeholders, clients, contractors, and decision-makers.
- Experience developing partnerships with First Nations groups, Indigenous communities, and local stakeholders is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of construction operations, project delivery models, estimating, and contract environments.
- Experience leading complex proposals, negotiations, and strategic business opportunities.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with CRM systems and sales tracking tools.
- Advanced experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics is considered an asset.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign and Illustrator, is considered an asset.

Working Conditions
