Second Engineer, Offshore Factory Freezer Vessel

Ocean Choice is currently accepting applications for the position of Second Engineer aboard one of our offshore factory freezer vessels. This is a full-time, permanent trip-on/trip-off position reporting to the Chief Engineer. The Second Engineer is responsible for supporting the overall management of the engine room and ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of vessel machinery, propulsion systems, refrigeration systems, and auxiliary equipment.
Working closely with the Chief Engineer, the successful candidate will assist in leading maintenance activities, supervising engine room operations, and supporting regulatory compliance and safety initiatives to ensure optimal vessel performance at sea.
Responsibilities
- Support the Chief Engineer in the safe and efficient operation of all vessel engineering systems and assist with delegated technical and administrative duties.
- Assist in managing daily engine room operations while providing leadership and guidance to engine room personnel.
- Identify equipment deficiencies and system failures, develop maintenance worklists, and support preventative and corrective maintenance programs.
- Manage engine room inventory levels and coordinate the procurement of spare parts and critical supplies.
- Safely operate, maintain, and troubleshoot propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, refrigeration systems, and other shipboard equipment in accordance with company policies and marine regulations.
- Lead and participate in scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
- Stand engine room watch in accordance with vessel schedules while monitoring engine performance, fuel consumption, alarms, and operating systems.
- Respond promptly to alarms, abnormalities, and equipment failures to maintain safe and efficient operations.
- Maintain accurate logs and records related to engine performance, maintenance activities, and spare parts inventory.
- Promote a professional, safety-focused engine room culture while supporting crew development and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in the vessel’s trip-on/trip-off rotation schedule, including handovers and collaborative maintenance periods with relief crews while in port.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures, marine regulations, environmental standards, and pollution prevention practices.
- Maintain firefighting and emergency response equipment and actively participate in emergency drills and safety exercises.
- Work collaboratively with deck crew, engineering personnel, and vessel officers to support efficient repairs and seamless vessel operations.
Qualifications
- Valid Class 4 Motor Ticket or greater.
- Marine Emergency Duties or Domestic Vessel Safety Certificate.
- Valid Transport Canada Seafarer’s Marine Medical Certificate.
- Extensive factory freezer/trawler fishing experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of refrigeration systems and winch systems is an asset.
- Experience with preventative maintenance software, particularly MxSuite.
- Valid Code of Conduct.
