Job Description
This role focuses on precision rebuilding and overhaul of heavy-duty diesel engines and related components, with a primary emphasis on Caterpillar oilfield equipment. You will perform full engine teardowns and rebuilds, diagnose and repair complex powertrain and hydraulic systems, and ensure all work meets strict quality and manufacturer specifications. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, accurate documentation, and the ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering blueprints.
Responsibilities
-
Perform complete teardowns and precise rebuilds of heavy-duty diesel engines, with a focus on Caterpillar 3176C models and similar core platforms.
-
Diagnose, overhaul, and reassemble complex powertrain and hydraulic systems, including Cat 140H/160H transmissions, differentials, brake groups, and circle drives.
-
Conduct detailed failure analysis during teardown to detect faults, measure wear, and determine exact part-replacement requirements.
-
Read and interpret technical manuals, fluid schematic charts, and engineering blueprints to correctly integrate custom-manufactured components such as upgraded grader circle segments.
-
Test all rebuilt engines and components to ensure they meet internal quality benchmarks, functional tolerances, and manufacturer specifications before being stocked or returned to service.
-
Use precision measuring tools, including micrometers, dial indicators, and torque multipliers, to verify tolerances and clearances during rebuilds.
-
Accurately document parts used, measurements taken, and rebuild phases completed to support inventory control and exchange-sales tracking.
-
Communicate effectively with suppliers to coordinate parts orders, resolve issues, and ensure timely delivery of required components.
-
Perform parts running and general support tasks related to obtaining and organizing components needed for repairs.
-
Work autonomously after initial training, managing your workload and maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity.
Essential Skills
-
Proven experience rebuilding and overhauling heavy-duty diesel engines, ideally including Caterpillar 3176C or similar models.
-
Hands-on experience with heavy equipment and heavy-duty mechanical systems, including transmissions, differentials, brake groups, and hydraulic components.
-
Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose complex engine and machine issues.
-
Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical manuals, and fluid schematic charts.
-
Proficiency using precision measurement tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, and torque multipliers.
-
Experience working on CAT oilfield equipment, including engines and related components.
-
Certification as a heavy equipment technician, heavy duty mechanic, or progression as an apprentice working toward a recognized ticket.
-
Red Seal or equivalent journeyperson certification in a relevant trade (or active pursuit of this certification).
-
Ability to communicate clearly with suppliers and team members regarding parts, timelines, and technical requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
-
Completion or ongoing pursuit of a recognized heavy duty or heavy equipment technician ticket.
-
Forklift experience, including operating sit-down counterbalance equipment (SDCB).
-
Diesel engine repair and machine repair within an oilfield or heavy equipment environment.
-
Experience with inventory documentation, including tracking parts usage and rebuild stages.
-
Comfort working with custom-manufactured components and integrating them into standard equipment platforms.
-
Strong attention to detail and commitment to meeting tight tolerances and manufacturer specifications.
Why Work Here?

The environment encourages autonomy, with the opportunity to take ownership of complex rebuild projects after initial training. You benefit from a stable weekday schedule with the option for additional overtime, allowing you to balance work and personal life while increasing your earnings. Working closely with experienced leadership on specialized oilfield CAT equipment offers continuous learning and professional growth in a niche, high-demand area of heavy-duty mechanics.
Work Environment
You work in a smaller shop setting focused on oilfield CAT equipment components, collaborating closely with the owner while enjoying a high degree of autonomy once trained. The role is hands-on and mechanically intensive, using tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, torque multipliers, and forklifts in a practical, workshop environment. Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with opportunities for overtime after 40 hours or on weekends. The setting is typical of a heavy equipment repair facility, where appropriate workwear and safety attire are expected to support safe and efficient mechanical operations.
