Summary
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist will primarily support the production operations in our Mitchell, ON plant, while also supporting office employees in the Hamilton, ON office. The successful candidate will drive the implementation of corporate environmental, health, and safety programs and site EHS initiatives in both the plant and offices, while ensuring regulatory compliance for the business. The role requires daily interaction with the plant leadership and production staff, reporting to internal EIS stakeholders, and communication with regulatory agencies and contractors as needed.
This position operates in a fast-paced environment located primarily within a production facility. Time will alternate between office/administrative work and being present inside the plant and surrounding grounds. Noise levels are generally low to moderate but may be loud while in the plant. The role involves regular sitting, standing, walking, bending as well as occasional climbing and possible lifting up to 40 pounds.
Occasional travel to the Hamilton, ON office and occasional international travel to support US sites may be required (<25%)
Responsibilities
- Provide visible EHS presence in the Mitchell, ON plant.
- Ensure regulatory compliance with all local, state, and Ministry regulations.
- Ensure health and safety roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, understood, and communicated to supervisors, management, and JHSC members.
- Manage site JHSC and related actions/initiatives.
- Manage all environmental aspects (air, water, waste) and regulatory impacts related to plant operations.
- Manage and revise site fire safety plan and develop a strong relationship with the local authorities.
- Manage all onsite injuries and incidents, including initial response/care, gathering investigation details, root cause analysis, and assignment of corrective actions.
- Manage Industrial Hygiene program and related programs for the Mitchell plant: noise monitoring, hearing conservation, silica exposure, respiratory protection, etc.
- Manage onsite chemical storage and hazard communication programs.
- Manage site training program for all EHS topics…develop and maintain a training matrix to track training compliance.
- Manage new hire EHS orientation, training, and necessary certifications (crane, confined space, LOTO, forklift, etc.)
- Author and/or revise EHS written programs, policies, and work instructions.
- Conduct EHS inspections, assessments, and walkthroughs to continually monitor site performance.
- Support site management in issuance of disciplinary action related to EHS infractions.
- Work with HR and plant management to review any return-to-work scenarios or temporary modified duty assignments.
- Manage JHSC, safety training, and safety initiatives for Hamilton, ON offices.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
Qualifications
- College diploma or equivalent training/experience in EHS field along with a minimum 5 years of practical EHS experience.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and WSIB legislation. Knowledge of OSHA regulations preferred.
- Experience with development and delivery of EHS Training.
- Experience with machine guarding and lockout/tagout program preferred.
- Experience with crane operation and rigging preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and basic software skills.
- Possess or ability to obtain a passport for travel to US sites.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Attention to detail, responsiveness, and commitment to pursuing improvement.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Professional, positive attitude and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.

Pay: $85,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
