Overview
Building Code Compliance & BIM/CAD Advisor – AI Innovation Project
Contract / Part-time / Advisory
Location: Greater Toronto Area / Ontario preferred; remote possible within Canada
Lextar AI Legal Solutions Inc. is an Ontario-based AI company developing human-supervised AI workflows for document-heavy and rule-heavy professional work.
We are exploring a Government of Canada innovation opportunity involving AI-assisted compliance review for building permit applications. The project would involve applying AI to review building permit materials, 2D drawings, PDF/CAD drawings, and potentially BIM/IFC models against Canadian building-code and permit-review requirements.
Lextar AI can provide the AI workflow, rule-mapping, explainable review, human-in-the-loop process, and auditability design. We are seeking a construction-code / building-permit / BIM-CAD domain expert to help us evaluate the opportunity, shape the proposal, and potentially participate in a prototype or funded project.
Ideal background
We are interested in candidates with experience in two or more of the following areas:
- National Building Code of Canada, Ontario Building Code, or other Canadian provincial building codes;
- building permit applications and municipal permit review;
- preparation or review of permit drawing sets;
- Part 3 and/or Part 9 building-code compliance;
- occupancy classification, egress, fire separation, accessibility, spatial separation, or related code issues;
- AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, IFC, or digital construction workflows;
- building-code compliance checklists, code matrices, plans review comments, or municipal deficiency comments;
- experience as an architect, P.Eng., architectural technologist, BCIN designer, building-code consultant, BIM/Revit specialist, former plans examiner, or municipal building official.
Possible responsibilities
The selected candidate may help with:
- identifying building-code compliance requirements suitable for AI-assisted review;
- explaining how permit drawings are reviewed in practice;
- helping convert selected code requirements into structured rules, checklists, or test cases;
- reviewing sample drawing/BIM workflows;
- validating whether AI-generated compliance findings are correct, incomplete, uncertain, or require human review;
- advising on practical permit-review workflows used by municipalities or design professionals;
- supporting a government innovation proposal and, if successful, participating in a prototype or pilot.
What we are looking for
We are looking for someone who can bridge the gap between building-code practice and AI-assisted compliance review. You do not need to be an AI engineer. The key requirement is practical knowledge of construction-code compliance, permit drawings, and how building officials or design professionals identify compliance issues.
Engagement structure
This role may begin as a short-term consulting or advisory engagement. Depending on candidate fit, project status, funding, and mutual interest, it may develop into a longer-term contract, full-time role, subcontractor relationship, or strategic partnership.
Compensation and engagement structure will be discussed with shortlisted candidates based on experience, availability, and project scope.
