We are looking for a Team Leader to lead our Personal Lines Team.
In this role, you will oversee the day to day operations of the team, providing technical guidance and mentorship to help underwriters develop their expertise. You will manage workload and priorities, promote a positive and collaborative team environment, and support the growth and development of the team through training, coaching, and ongoing support. You will ensure underwriting decisions are made in a timely and accurate manner, and maintain service level agreements with our broker partners.
You will also help drive the growth and profitability of SPG Canada by maintaining and building strong broker relationships to solicit renewals and generate new business. This includes contributing to the hiring process and managing the direct reporting needs of your team. Supported by a team of experienced practice leaders, managers, and executives, we provide an extensive array of products, ample capacity, and the empowerment needed to enable your success and that of your team.
This is a hybrid position in our Toronto, ON office.
In this position you will:
- Oversee day to day operations of the team;
- Provide technical guidance & mentor the team to develop their expertise;
- Manage workload and priorities while promoting teamwork and a positive environment;
- Develop, implement and track the team’s action plan as per the defined goals;
- Manage and support the growth and development of a team of underwriters;
- Train new hires and provide ongoing coaching and support to team members;
- Ensure that underwriting decisions are made in a timely and accurate manner;
- Execute delegated tasks from management;
- Senior Level Underwriting skills;
- Maintain service level agreements with brokers and oversee service levels achievement within the team;
- Maintain existing broker relationships to solicit renewals and generate new business;
- Contribute to the hiring process and assist in interviews; and
- Manage direct reporting of the team (sick days, duties, time off, performance etc.).
You’re a good fit if you have:
- Minimum 4+ years of relevant experience in personal line underwriting and 2+ years in a leadership role;
- Advanced insurance acumen, including a strong understanding of personal lines underwriting theory and the ability to apply this knowledge in day to day practice
- Strong ability to multi-task and monitor progress to meet deadlines;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and influence stakeholders at all levels;
- Effectively manage multiple projects under time constraints while maintain daily business performance;
- Passion for people coaching;
- Natural ability for conflict management;
- Collaborative leadership style with the ability to take initiative;
- Strong leadership skills to positively influence team members and provide direction;
- A Chartered Insurance Professional designation (CIP) (or are actively pursuing);
- A RIBO level 2 license, or ability to qualify within 90 days of employment; and
- Working knowledge of MS Office.

The expected salary range for this position is from $80,000 – $90,000 and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
