Position Summary
The Controller – Finance, Procurement & Quality is responsible for overseeing the company's financial operations while leading procurement activities and ensuring compliance with food safety and quality management systems. This role provides strategic financial leadership, maintains strong supplier relationships, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports operational excellence throughout the organization.
The successful candidate will work closely with the director of operations to improve profitability, optimize inventory and purchasing, maintain quality standards, and support the company's growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Lead all accounting and financial reporting functions.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning.
- Monitor financial performance and provide analysis to senior management.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate financial records.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and banking relationships.
- Coordinate year-end audits and work with external accountants.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and tax regulations.
- Develop and maintain internal financial controls and company policies.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
Procurement & Supply Chain
- Develop and execute procurement strategies for raw materials, packaging, ingredients, and operational supplies.
- Source and qualify new suppliers while maintaining existing supplier relationships.
- Negotiate pricing, contracts, and supply agreements.
- Monitor supplier performance, delivery reliability, and product quality.
- Manage inventory levels to balance production requirements with working capital objectives.
- Analyze purchasing trends and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Coordinate purchasing activities with production, sales, and warehouse teams.
- Ensure continuity of supply and manage supplier risks.
Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain and continuously improve the company's Quality Management System (QMS).
- Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and customer requirements.
- Support or lead certifications such as HACCP, GMP, SQF, BRCGS, ISO 22000, or other applicable standards.
- Review and approve supplier documentation, Certificates of Analysis (COAs), specifications, and quality records.
- Coordinate internal audits, supplier audits, and external certification audits.
- Manage corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Investigate quality incidents, customer complaints, and non-conforming materials.
- Ensure proper document control and quality record management.
- Work closely with suppliers to resolve quality issues and improve performance.
Leadership & Operations
- Collaborate with Operations, Sales, R&D, and Executive Management to support business objectives.
- Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) across finance, procurement, and quality.
- Mentor and supervise finance and administrative personnel.
- Participate in strategic planning and business development initiatives.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement through automation and continuous improvement.
- Foster a culture of accountability, quality, and operational excellence.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline.
- CPA designation preferred.
- Minimum 5–10 years of progressive experience in finance, accounting or operations.
- Experience within the food ingredient, food manufacturing, nutraceutical, or pharmaceutical industries is an asset.
- Experience managing procurement and supplier relationships.
- Working knowledge of food safety and quality systems (HACCP, GMP, SQF, BRCGS, ISO 22000, etc.) is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of inventory management and cost accounting.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Excel is an asset.

Compensation
