Position Summary: Green Infrastructure Technician
The Green Infrastructure Technician supports the installation, maintenance and ongoing performance of living walls, green roofs, interior planters, moss walls and related irrigation systems.
This is a hands-on field position involving plant care, system inspections, installation work, troubleshooting and preventative maintenance. The technician will travel to commercial, institutional and residential properties throughout the Greater Toronto Area and occasionally beyond.
The ideal candidate is dependable, mechanically inclined and comfortable working with plants, tools and water-based systems. This position is well suited to someone who enjoys practical problem-solving, takes pride in quality workmanship and wants to build a career in green infrastructure.
Key ResponsibilitiesInstallation and Project Support
- Assist with the installation of living walls, green roofs, moss walls, planters and related green infrastructure
- Load, transport and unload plants, tools, equipment and project materials
- Assemble modules, frames, basins, irrigation lines and other system components
- Prepare plants for installation, including bare-rooting, cleaning and arranging plants
- Measure, mark, drill and fasten components according to project drawings and instructions
- Protect floors, walls, furniture and surrounding finishes during installation
- Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area
- Assist with system commissioning, testing and project deficiencies
Plant Care and Maintenance
- Complete scheduled maintenance visits for living walls, green roofs and interior planters
- Water, prune, clean, rotate and replace plants as required
- Inspect plants for pests, disease, stress and nutrient deficiencies
- Monitor soil moisture, growing media and root-zone conditions
- Maintain appropriate foliage coverage and overall design appearance
- Remove dead or unhealthy plant material
- Apply approved nutrients, treatments and soil amendments
- Complete seasonal maintenance and plant replacements
Irrigation and System Maintenance
- Inspect pumps, tubing, fittings, emitters, drains, reservoirs and water-level controls
- Test irrigation systems for leaks, blockages and even water distribution
- Clean reservoirs, basins, filters and other system components
- Measure and adjust water-quality parameters such as pH, EC and TDS
- Diagnose basic irrigation, drainage and equipment issues
- Replace worn or damaged tubing, fittings and system components
- Identify deficiencies and report repairs requiring additional technical support
- Respond to system alerts and maintenance concerns when assigned
Documentation and Client Service
- Complete maintenance reports, inspection checklists and service records
- Record plant replacements, water-quality readings and system deficiencies
- Take clear before-and-after photographs of completed work
- Communicate professionally with clients, building staff and other trades
- Explain basic maintenance findings when requested
- Report site concerns and recommended corrective actions to the supervisor
- Represent New Earth Solutions professionally at all times
Shop and Equipment Responsibilities
- Prepare plants, materials and tools for upcoming projects
- Receive and inspect plant and material deliveries
- Clean and sanitize tools, equipment, totes and workstations
- Maintain organized inventory and report low-stock items
- Label project materials, plants and storage bins
- Inspect tools and equipment before use
- Keep company vehicles and work areas clean and organized
Skills, Abilities and Knowledge
- Strong work ethic, reliability and attention to detail
- Interest in plants, sustainability and green building systems
- Basic knowledge of plant care, horticulture, irrigation or landscaping is an asset
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn technical systems
- Comfortable using drills, saws and other common hand and power tools
- Able to diagnose basic plant-health and irrigation problems
- Able to follow drawings, instructions, checklists and safety procedures
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Able to work independently once trained
- Comfortable working in occupied commercial and residential environments
- Comfortable working on ladders up to 12 feet in height
- Able to lift and carry plants, tools and materials weighing up to 50 pounds
- Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying conditions
- Working at Heights certification, or willingness to obtain it
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence and a clean driving record are preferred
- Previous experience in horticulture, landscaping, construction, irrigation, plumbing or building maintenance is an asset
Travel and Schedule
This position requires regular travel to client properties throughout the Greater Toronto Area and occasional travel beyond the region. Work schedules may vary based on installation requirements, maintenance routes and client operating hours. Occasional early-morning, evening or weekend work may be required.
Compensation and Structure
- Part-time or contract position
- Approximately 8–20 hours per week, with the potential for additional hours and future growth
- Compensation: $22–$26 per hour, based on experience, technical ability and qualifications
- Opportunities for training and advancement as the company grows
