Position Summary:
The Senior CNC Machinist is a highly skilled manufacturing professional responsible for setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and optimizing complex CNC machining operations in a high-precision aerospace manufacturing environment. This role specializes in 3-axis and 5-axis milling, CNC turning, and EDM machining while supporting both production and prototype components with tight tolerances.
Working collaboratively with Engineering, Programming, Quality, Planning, and Additive Manufacturing teams, the Senior CNC Machinist provides technical expertise, mentors junior machinists, and drives continuous improvement in machining processes, quality, and productivity. The successful candidate thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, maintains a strong commitment to safety and AS9100 quality standards, and takes pride in producing precision components that meet the highest levels of accuracy and performance
Key Responsibilities:
Machining and Technical Leadership
-
Coordinate and perform complex setups and operation of CNC lathes with multi-tool heads and sub-spindles, primarily on FANUC-controlled equipment, supporting both repetitive production and intricate one-off aerospace components.
-
Set up, operate, and troubleshoot 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling machines, ensuring stability and precision when machining complex geometries and tight-tolerance features.
-
Operate wire EDM and sinker EDM equipment to produce high-accuracy features, fine details, and controlled surface finishes.
-
Apply advanced probing cycles, offsets, and in-process verification techniques to maintain sub-thousandth accuracy throughout the machining process.
-
Review and troubleshoot G-code, refine toolpaths, and collaborate closely with CNC programmers to optimize programs for FANUC machines.
-
Perform intermediate to advanced maintenance on CNC mills, lathes, and EDM equipment, including alignment checks, lubrication, coolant and filtration management, and minor repairs.
-
Identify and escalate machine performance issues early, coordinating with maintenance personnel or equipment vendors to minimize downtime.
-
Follow company standards and procedures related to tooling libraries and equipment management.
-
Support the development of preventive maintenance routines and participate in machine capability evaluations.
-
Follow standard operating procedures to ensure full traceability of machined parts by maintaining accurate travelers, setup sheets, inspection records, and process documentation.
-
Adhere to all AS9100 requirements, safety procedures, and internal work instructions.
-
Collaborate with CNC Programming, Engineering, Additive Manufacturing Applications, Planning, and Quality teams to resolve machining issues and improve manufacturing processes.
-
Mentor machinists and apprentices by sharing expertise in 5-axis machining, turning, EDM, FANUC controls, and advanced setup techniques.
-
Support other departments as needed, including staging materials, preparing fixtures, organizing work areas, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
Requirements:
Technical Skills & Experience
-
Minimum 7+ years of CNC machining experience, with strong capability in 5-axis and 3-axis milling and CNC lathes.
-
Extensive experience with FANUC-controlled machining centers and lathes, including complex setups, troubleshooting, and program adjustments.
-
Proven ability to work with tight tolerances and complex geometries.
-
Expert-level proficiency in blueprint reading, G-code interpretation, and GD&T.
-
Skilled in probing cycles, in-process inspection, and advanced metrology equipment.
-
Demonstrated ability to perform intermediate to advanced maintenance on CNC mills, lathes, and EDM equipment.
-
Wire EDM and sinker EDM experience is considered a strong asset.
-
CNC programming experience (especially FANUC) is considered a strong asset.
-
Experience with advanced inspection tools (e.g., CMM, optical comparators) is considered a strong asset.
-
Experience in aerospace machining or other high-precision industries (e.g., medical, defence) is an asset.
-
Familiarity with AS9100 or NADCAP standards and aerospace documentation practices.
-
Experience with high-performance materials such as titanium, Inconel, or aerospace-grade aluminum alloys.
