Instructor for Course ARCH 405 / Design & Construction 3.
ARCH 405 is a project-based course in design theory and critique that focuses on the life cycles of existing buildings, materials, and resources from a multi-scale perspective. The course centers on the conceptual and technical application of sustainable and circular design approaches to complex programs that respond to current socio-economic challenges and multifaceted crises.
The pedagogical outcomes of this course are:
The reinforcement of critical thinking on architecture, sustainability discourses, and the production, maintenance, and end-of-life of the built environment.
Expanding communication skills and methods to adequately present original and complex programmatic, design, and construction ideas, using various media (physical models, drawings, …)
The course builds around a series of modules. These modules entail:
Design theory is covered through lectures, distributed among course instructors, and in-class debates. Knowledge of local projects is acquired through visits, distributed among the course instructors. Reviews are designed as key learning exercises, and instructors are involved in their preparation.
The design pedagogy relies mainly on:
All students will be required to detail their work on a scale of 1:20 and develop scaled models.
TQR:
M.Arch. or equivalent (first professional degree); professional practice in sustainable construction; post-secondary teaching experience in architecture; technical and theoretical expertise on circular and reuse design and (de-)construction approaches.
This studio will be team-taught, which means that multiple instructors will be assigned to teach this course. Instructors may work with multiple different groups of students throughout the term.
Instructors will work closely with the course teaching team and administration ahead of the semester to prepare course material (including site, case study, and building identification and documentation) and finalize course organization. All candidates will work closely with the Director as well as the Studio Coordinator to ensure that their course material meets the University Calendar regulations, the pedagogical objectives of the School and the specific Canadian Architectural Certification Board Student Performance Criteria (CACB – SPC) for their specific course.
Appointment is from August 31 to December 31, 2026.
6 credits. Salary $17,800.
