Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Family Law Assistant with 2-4 years of experience supporting family law practitioners in Alberta. The successful candidate will play a key role in managing files, preparing legal documents, coordinating client communications, and assisting lawyers with all aspects of family law matters.
This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced legal environment, demonstrates strong organizational skills, and is committed to providing exceptional client service during sensitive and often emotionally challenging situations.
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain family law files from opening through resolution.
- Draft, prepare, and format legal documents, including: Statements of Claim, Applications, Affidavits, Financial Statements, Divorce Judgments, Parenting and Support-related documents, Correspondence and court forms
- File documents through Alberta Courts' electronic filing systems and ensure compliance with court deadlines.
- Schedule client meetings, mediations, court appearances, and examinations.
- Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and third parties.
- Organize and maintain physical and electronic file records.
- Track limitation periods, deadlines, and court dates.
- Assist with disclosure collection and organization.
- Prepare binders and materials for hearings, mediations, and trials.
- Handle incoming and outgoing correspondence and maintain lawyer calendars.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Legal Assistant in family law.
- Strong knowledge of Alberta family law procedures and court processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Experience with legal practice management software is considered an asset.
- Excellent drafting, proofreading, and document formatting skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage competing deadlines.
- High degree of professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Legal Assistant Diploma, Legal Administrative Assistant Certificate, or equivalent education.
- Experience with divorce, parenting, child support, spousal support, property division, and enforcement matters.
- Familiarity with Alberta Rules of Court and family law forms.
- Experience supporting one or more family law lawyers in a busy practice.
