Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Mobile Heavy Duty Mechanic to provide on-site maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting across a diverse fleet of vehicles and industrial equipment. Work spans coach-style buses, sawmill/wood-processing machinery, construction equipment such as excavators, and bucket trucks. The focus of this role is preventative maintenance and keeping all equipment running smoothly and reliably. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with heavy-duty diesel vehicles, hydraulics, and industrial machinery, and is comfortable working independently in a mobile environment. This role requires travel to Vancouver Island, occasionally overnight.
Duties
- Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance across the full fleet: coach buses, wood mill machinery, construction equipment (excavators), and bucket trucks.
- Proactively identify wear, leaks, and potential failures before they cause downtime.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using schematics and diagnostic tools.
- Perform repairs including welding, assembly, electrical work, and component replacement using hand and power tools.
- Service and inspect coach-style buses, including engine, brake, suspension, and chassis systems.
- Maintain and repair sawmill/wood-processing machinery to minimize downtime.
- Service hydraulic systems on excavators, bucket trucks, and related construction equipment.
- Operate equipment for testing purposes after repairs to confirm proper functionality.
- Maintain detailed service records and maintenance schedules for all equipment.
- Travel to job sites on Vancouver Island as required, including occasional overnight trips.
- Work closely with operators, explaining maintenance needs and recommended servicing.
- Ensure all work complies with safety regulations and industry standards.
Skills & Qualifications
- Proven experience as a heavy-duty mechanic across diesel vehicles and industrial machinery.
- Experience with coach buses, construction equipment (excavators), bucket trucks, and/or mill/processing machinery strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, welding, and mechanical assembly.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
- Ability to read schematics and technical manuals accurately.
- Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Commercial Transport certification an asset.
- Valid driver's licence required; air brake endorsement and Class licence for operating buses/heavy vehicles an asset.
- Ability to perform certified aerial-lift/bucket-truck inspections is a plus but not required — external certification is available.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, preventative approach to maintenance.
- Good communication skills and reliability working independently.
- Willing and able to travel to Vancouver Island, including occasional overnight stays.
- Capable of heavy lifting and working in physically demanding environments.
This position offers a skilled mechanic the opportunity to work on a genuinely varied fleet — buses, mill equipment, construction machinery, and bucket trucks — in a role focused on keeping everything running smoothly through strong preventative maintenance.
