ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Under the supervision of the Community Health Manager, and with day-to-day direction from the Recreation Program Planner, the Recreation Assistant is responsible for assisting in the implementation of after school programs and recreation activities. This is a supporting role, with daily direction being provided by a senior staff member and through periodic team meetings.
The Recreation Assistant will maintain and model positive behavior and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner. Activities will promote physical health, personal development, and cultural enrichment, and will encourage participants’ active participation and ownership in programs.
Other important factors include the development of an awareness and knowledge of reference persons and materials to assist in addressing after school care and program/service development, as well as addressing problems, challenges, and issues. References will include written policies, procedures and guidelines, schedules, day logs and checklists, and equipment manuals and reference handbooks.
Other related duties as required.
WHAT YOU BRING
Knowledge & Experience
- Mature individual with a minimum grade 12 high school diploma, supplemented with a Responsible Adult certification.
Skills & Abilities
- Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
- Good communication and writing/documentation skills.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact well with employees and the public.
- Organized and able to handle competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Computer literacy, including effective working skills with Microsoft Office, email, and internet use.
- Able to work independently or as part of a team and maintain agreeable relationships with public/staff
- Able to complete duties in a safe manner, following established safety rules, policies and procedures.
Other Requirements
- Desire to work with children and adults, and to learn about and support recreation programs
- Minimum 19 years of age.
- Physically fit and able to work days, evenings and weekends, including outdoors
- Compliance with BC Immunization program and TB Screening.
- Satisfactory completion of a police information check (vulnerable sector)
- Ability to provide own transportation to work.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and Drivers Abstract.
Optional/Assets
- Ability to speak Dene and/or Cree.
- Other certificates such as: WHMIS, First Aid with CPR, Food Safe.
WORK SETTING
The position is full-time, with hours that vary based on program needs. The successful candidate must be available for after-school activities, evening programming, and occasional weekend events, including tournaments and special events.
From September to June (during the school year), Program Assistants work a regular schedule Monday to Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The after-school program for children ages 5–12 operates from 3:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., including time for preparation, cleanup, and participant transitions. The evening youth program for ages 13–17 runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Fridays are designated as program preparation days, with regular office hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During the summer months (July and August), the schedule shifts to daytime hours, with Program Assistants working 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., along with occasional evening and weekend programming as required. Travel is required for this role and may involve working in and out of the office at indoor, outdoor, and multiple program locations. Overtime may be required and must be approved by the supervisor(s).
