Located approximately 155 kilometres northwest of Prince George in central BC, the Mount Milligan Mine is a conventional truck-shovel open-pit copper and gold mine and concentrator with a 60,000 tpd capacity copper flotation processing plant.
Mount Milligan operates with comfortable camp accommodations equipped with private washrooms, TV, Wi-Fi, an onsite gym, and other recreational activities. Bus transportation to and from site is provided free of charge from several locations within the region.
Mount Milligan promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Technician, Environmental to join our Mount Milligan Mine team.
The Environmental Technician will report to the Supervisor, Environment (or their delegate) and will be based at the site and work a 14 day in, 14 day out rotation, with 12-hour workdays. Camp accommodations will be provided, or you can travel daily back and forth on a company bus to/from Mackenzie or Fort St James.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in field projects.
- Conduct environmental monitoring programs in accordance with provincial and federal permits, MTM Management Plans, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and QA/QC requirements.
- Collect surface water, groundwater, soil, sediment, air quality, hydrology, and biological monitoring samples using approved field methods and the BC Field Sampling Manual.
- Perform in-stream monitoring, vegetation surveys, reclamation monitoring, and other environmental field programs that support the Mine.
- Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair environmental monitoring equipment, including water quality instruments, flow monitoring equipment, hydrology equipment, and air monitoring equipment.
- Ensure lab inventory is up to date each week and work with Environment Advisor to order lab supplies when needed, ensuring a healthy supply for sampling.
- Complete environmental inspections and compliance audits, including contractor environmental performance, waste management, erosion and sediment control, spill prevention, and permit compliance inspections.
- Maintain accurate field notes, chain of custody documentation, GPS records, photographs, and electronic data entry into environmental databases (e.g., MP5/MonitorPro, Fulcrum and/or equivalent).
- Assist with environmental data management, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), interpretation of field data, and preparation of technical summaries and reports when needed (annual reports).
- Respond to environmental incidents and spills by implementing site response procedures, documenting observations, and assisting with investigations and corrective actions.
- Safely operate light vehicles, UTVs, snowmobiles, boats, and other equipment when required.
- Promote safe work practices by completing FLHAs, participating in toolbox meetings, following HSE requirements, and ensuring work is completed safely and in compliance with environmental commitments.
- Act as a key liaison for the Environment Department across operational departments, supporting Coordinators/Supervisor in ensuring health and safety compliance during environmental field programs.
- Lead implementation and ongoing management of the department’s compliance database, with direction from Coordinators/Supervisor and external consultants.
- Give input on continuous improvement of environmental data management systems and tools to support departmental operations.
- Give input and up to date on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) for environmental data management.
- Ensure data for environmental databases and systems that comply with applicable permits (e.g., PE-104777, PR-104778, PA-104779, M-236), regulatory requirements, and site management plans (e.g., SWAMMP, WSAP), as well as internal environmental program standards are uploaded properly and within timelines.
- Support environmental incident response and investigations.
- Support waste management on site
- Contribute to continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System (EMS), including MTM environmental standards and processes.
- Deliver environmental awareness and training content for toolbox talks, orientations, safety meetings, and training sessions.
- Support planning and execution of environmental projects and initiatives as required.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff, including technicians, students, and seasonal employees.
- Assist with planning and coordinating environmental monitoring programs and seasonal field campaigns.
- Support environmental permitting activities, audits, regulatory inspections, and external reporting requirements.
- Participate in emergency response activities and environmental preparedness exercises.
- Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Exploration, and contractors to implement environmental mitigations and resolve compliance issues.
- Complete other environmental duties, special projects, and assignments as directed by the Supervisor/Coordinator, Environment.
Our ideal candidate will possess the following skillset and experience:
- A 2-year technical diploma/certificate in an environmental-related field. 1-2 years of experience in the mining industry with experience working in environmental field programs or 4-5+ years of experience working in environmental field programs without a technical certificate.
- Good computer skills are desirable (MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), or willingness to take further training.
- Experience with reading and understanding permits, licenses, and environmental management plans.
- Experience in Database management e.g. ISOMETRX, MonitorPro.
- Safety conscious, reliable, self-starter and a team player.
- Detail oriented with ability to take clear, concise and defensible field notes.
- Prefer previous experience with environmental monitoring/sampling (e.g. some combination of: stream/lake sampling, benthic/sediment sampling, groundwater sampling, fish sampling, stream flow measurement, vegetation identification, erosion/sedimentation monitoring etc.).
- Previous experience with mentoring less experienced Monitors or Technicians would be considered an asset.
- Valid BC Class 5 drivers license.
- Valid Level 1 First Aid Certificate (or willingness to undertake training).
- ATV and snowmobile Operator’s Certificate (or willingness to undertake training).
- Pleasure Craft License (or willingness to undertake training).
