General Job Description
Reporting to the TPS Supervisor, the TPS Engineer is responsible for improving plant performance through Toyota Production System (TPS) principles, with a strong focus on material flow optimization and ownership of AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) and AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot) systems.
This role acts as the site subject matter expert for mobile robotics, driving system performance, troubleshooting issues, and leading continuous improvement and expansion initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
AGV / AMR System Ownership
- Lead setup, commissioning, and continuous improvement of AGV & AMR systems
- Own system performance including uptime, efficiency, and material delivery reliability
- Troubleshoot and resolve system issues (navigation, routing, traffic congestion, communication faults)
- Coordinate with external vendors and internal teams to maintain and optimize system performance
Material Flow & Process Improvement
- Design and implement material flow improvements using TPS/Kaizen methodologies
- Conduct time studies and operational analysis to reduce cycle time, inventory, and lead time
- Perform capacity planning and material flow simulations
- Maintain and optimize plant layouts in support of automation and flow efficiency
Project & Equipment Implementation
- Lead AGV/AMR-related projects including layout changes, system expansion, and new equipment integration
- Direct the design and build of workstations, fixtures, and AGV interfaces
- Manage procurement and implementation of jigs, fixtures, and automation-related equipment
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Drive ergonomic improvements and workstation redesigns
- Collaborate with Production, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to resolve system issues and improve performance
- Support plant-wide continuous improvement initiatives aligned with TPS principles
Qualifications:
- University degree in Engineering or equivalent experience in automation, robotics, or mechatronics
- Experience in manufacturing environments with a focus on material flow and process improvement
- Experience with AGV/AMR systems or industrial automation (strong asset)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with hands-on troubleshooting ability
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD (or similar tools)
- Knowledge of TPS / Lean Manufacturing principles (asset)
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Self-directed with a strong drive to learn and apply new technologies
