About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 77-year-old woman living with dementia in New Edinburgh, Ottawa. She lives at home with her devoted husband, who has been her primary caregiver for the past five years. While he's been doing an incredible job, the family recognizes he needs support to maintain his own wellbeing and continue his activities. The client is reserved, introverted, and experiences anxiety when her husband isn't present. She's still relatively independent with mobility and personal care, though her dementia is progressing and she can no longer complete tasks like operating the washing machine independently. The home environment is calm and structured, with established routines that help her feel secure. They have a small dog that she enjoys walking around the block.
Responsibilities:
- Provide companionship and a calm, reassuring presence while the husband steps out for his own activities
- Assist with light housekeeping tasks cooperatively, helping the client feel involved (laundry, tidying, light cleaning)
- Offer memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed
- Support the client in maintaining her sense of independence through simple tasks
- Accompany her on short walks with the dog around the neighborhood
- Help maintain the established daily routines that provide structure and comfort
- Communicate observations and any concerns to the family
What We're Looking For:
- Fluent in French (strongly preferred) or English
- Calm, patient, and low-key demeanor—someone who won't overwhelm with excessive energy
- Experience supporting individuals with dementia or memory challenges
- Comfortable with a slow introduction period where trust is built gradually
- Respectful of the client's reserved nature and need for quiet companionship
- Ability to engage cooperatively rather than taking over tasks completely
- Strong communication skills with family members
- Reliable and consistent presence
Schedule:
Twice weekly visits, 3 hours per visit (6 hours total per week). Flexible scheduling to be determined, with the expectation that initial visits may include the husband present as the client adjusts to the new caregiver. The family anticipates care needs will increase over time and is open to expanding hours as needed.
