Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Co-op Operations, the incumbent provides leadership and coordination to the Co-op Student Advisor team in achieving co-operative education priorities and objectives as they relate to student preparation for the job search and transition to work. The incumbent collaborates with the Co-op Student Development Officer to ensure high-quality programming and one-on-one services to co-op students. This position contributes to co-op student job search success, workplace preparedness, and overall positive experience with the Co-op Program.
The incumbent is skilled in providing holistic one-on-one support that is informed by student development theory. They provide individualized advising to students who experience particular challenges in the job search and in the workplace, guiding them through a self-reflective learning process. The incumbent provides subject matter leadership to the Co-op Student Advisor team in this regard.
Qualifications:
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
- A strong customer service focus with the ability to motivate colleagues and students.
- Demonstrated understanding of current work-integrated learning approaches, tools and best practices in the context of post-secondary students.
- A superior understanding of the key elements of the job search cycle.
- Excellent writing and project management skills.
- Experience in needs assessment and development of personalized action plans.
- A high degree of maturity, and sound professional judgement to manage unique
Student situations independently. Crisis management and appropriate referral skills are a must.
- Strong attention to detail and organization to manage a large workload with shifting priorities.
- A solid understanding of the University environment.
- Flexibility is required to accommodate event logistics and attendance outside regular business hours, on occasion.
- Adept in the use of technology such as databases, learning management software, productivity tools and common office software such as MS Office to work with large amounts of data.
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through:
- Completion of a four-year honours university degree in social sciences, business, or related areas. The completion of post-graduate study in Adult Education, Career Counseling, or Learning and Development will be considered an asset.
- A minimum of five years of relevant experience including two years of supervisory experience.
- Work experience in employability and/or work-integrated learning programs, ideally within the context of post-secondary education.
- Knowledge of the dynamic landscape of work integrated learning, and particularly co-operative education, in the post-secondary context. Significant experience in supporting clients and/or students in the technicalities of the job search and in achieving success in the workplace. Knowledge of the labour market as it relates to student and new graduate employment.
