Job Description
Assist the Program Coordinator with the direct supervision of part-time Learn to Skate Instructors and Hockey Instructors during preschool, child/youth and adult skating programs.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the supervision of part-time staff
- Provide job performance feedback to part-time staff
- Provide direction and guidance to part-time staff
- Provide direction to staff and respond to emergency/difficult situations to ensure a coordinated response
- Assign roles and duties to part-time staff
- Ensure part-time staff are enforcing and adhering to policies and procedures
- Adjust teaching areas/lineups as needed
- Ensure staff are continuously evaluating and updating participant worksheets
- Directly supervise the program area
- Enforce policies and procedures of recreation facility
- Monitor participants in program, identifying risks/hazards and associate good judgement
- Educate the public on program safety with a focus on accident prevention
- Respond to emergency situations and provide first aid within the scope of training
- Demonstrate, instruct and lead participants through a set of skating and hockey specific skills
- Develop progressive lesson plans specific to the abilities of each group
- Error-detection & correction of all participants to enhance their skills and enjoyment of skating and hockey
- Supervise and evaluate participants progress throughout the program
- Prepare and organize program equipment and supplies and perform safety check of equipment prior to being used
- Ensure participants leave the ice surface safely at the end of each class and that the ice surface is safe and all equipment is prepared/put away during each on-ice session
- Directly guide volunteers as required
- Administration
- Keep accurate participant attendance records
- Monitor class attendance lists
- Follow up with full-time staff regarding participants with extended absences
- Review participant progress cards for accuracy and completion
- Collect instructor worksheets upon the completion of a session
- Enforce and follow City of Oshawa policies and procedures
- Complete Public Accident/Incident Reports or Complaint/Enquiry Forms as required
- Administer first aid as required
- Complete Public Accident/Incident Reports or Complaint/Enquiry Forms as required and report to Head Instructor or Program Coordinator
- Enforce City of Oshawa policies and procedures, including but not limited to: admission requirement standards, emergency procedures (eg. fire plan)
- Support and demonstrate the City of Oshawa core values of Authenticity, Courage, and Trust
- Preform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Minimum one (1) year of Community College
- National Coaching Certification Program Certification related to specific program area e.g. hockey/figure skating
- Possess and keep current Standard First Aid/CPR ‘C’ qualifications
- Two (2) to three (3) years experience instructing/coaching in learn to skate or hockey programs
- 5 years’ experience participating in skating and/or hockey
- Wear self-issued CSA approved hockey helmet
- Demonstrate good customer service and communication skills to deal effectively and courteously with staff and the general public; good interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
- Attend all staff trainings and meetings
- Ability to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
