- Primarily office-based, with some community-based/outreach support as needed
- Reports to the Community Law Advocate
- Wage: $25.00–$27.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
- Term position to March 31, 2027, with potential for renewal subject to funding
Position Summary
The Government Benefits Advocate supports community members in navigating and completing applications for a variety of government benefits and income supports.
This role provides guidance, advocacy, and administrative assistance to help ensure applications are complete, accurate, and submitted in a timely manner.
The successful candidate will be compassionate, patient, organized, and comfortable working with individuals who may experience barriers related to disability, income, age, or access to services.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide a welcoming and judgment-free space for clients to discuss their needs and circumstances.
- Help clients understand their rights, entitlements, and available benefits.
- Provide one-on-one support throughout the application process.
- Assist clients with applications for the Persons with Disabilities designation (PWD), Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction (MSDPR) supplements, Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPP-D), Disability Tax Credit (DTC), Old Age Security (OAS), Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Canada Child Benefit (CCB), Indigenous Status applications, First Nations Health Authority registration, and other relevant benefits and programs.
- Communicate with government agencies and service providers on behalf of clients.
- Follow up on applications and help resolve questions or issues.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records.
- Complete required program reporting.
- Provide referrals to other community services and supports when appropriate.
- Stay informed about changes to government benefit programs, eligibility requirements, and application processes.
- Support clients in a respectful, culturally safe, and trauma-informed manner.
- Provide encouragement and support to clients while recognizing when additional mental health or community supports may be appropriate.
- Research disability and accessibility-related grants that may benefit the program.
- Assist with preparing grant applications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Experience
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a respectful, culturally safe, and trauma-informed manner.
- Post-secondary education in social work, human services, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working in social services, advocacy, or a non-profit environment.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities, seniors, or vulnerable populations is an asset.
- Knowledge of government benefit programs and application processes is an asset.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or Indigenous-serving organizations is an asset.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and client record systems.
