Job Description
The On-Call Bus Driver supports the Neighbourhood Houses programs by safely transporting children, seniors, and community members to and from various destinations, including schools, program sites, and special events. This role plays an important part in helping community members stay connected, active, and engaged. The position is on an as-needed basis, providing coverage for regular drivers during absences, vacations, or busy program periods.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely operate the neighbourhood houses bus or van in accordance with all traffic laws and centre policies.
- Provide safe and reliable transportation for children, seniors, and community members to and from program locations.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any maintenance or safety concerns immediately.
- Assist passengers in boarding and exiting the vehicle, providing extra care and support to seniors or those with mobility challenges.
- Ensure all passengers are seated and secured appropriately before driving.
- Maintain a calm, patient, and friendly demeanor, fostering a welcoming environment for all passengers.
- Keep accurate trip records, including passenger counts, mileage, fuel usage, and incident reports.
- Communicate promptly with the Program Supervisor regarding scheduling, delays, or route changes.
- Keep the vehicle clean, sanitized, and in good condition.
- Follow all health and safety protocols, including emergency procedures and child safety guidelines.
Skills and Qualifications
- Valid Class 4 Driver’s License (unrestricted) or higher, with a clean driving record.
- Minimum of 2 years of safe driving experience, preferably in a community, childcare, or senior-serving environment.
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience working with children and seniors, demonstrating patience, care, and respect.
- Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with passengers, staff, and families.
- Knowledge of local routes and streets in the [City/Area] area.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including mornings, afternoons, and occasional evenings or weekends.
- Reliable, responsible, and committed to ensuring passenger safety and comfort.
Working Conditions
- On-call, casual position – shifts vary based on program needs and driver availability.
- Work involves both indoor and outdoor conditions, including variable weather.
- Physical activity required, such as assisting passengers or handling mobility aids.

Compensation: $26.14/hour, Plus 4% Vacation Pay
