This position is required to temporarily work in person at the Appleby Arena -1201 Appleby Line, Burlington. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview
This position is responsible for the administration, interpretation, compliance and enforcement of municipal by-laws and other applicable statues relating to property standards, zoning, signs, swimming pools and all other by-laws or regulations for which the department is responsible.
Responsibilities
The position is responsible for enforcement of such By-laws, Acts, and Regulations as are given to the Department to operate. This includes:
Responding to and making recommendations for resolution of complaints, and follow-up responsibilities.
Responding to the general public, mayor and members of Council and other government agencies pertaining to by-laws that the Department is responsible for.
Processing sign, pool and business license applications, including reviewing, processing and site approving, with reference to all relevant by-laws.
Provides departmental comments on sign variances and to other agencies, including NEC and Halton Conservation, as required.
Preparing orders to comply, notices of contravention relevant to by-laws or other statutes and follow-up to compliance, issuing Part 1 tickets, taking evidence, initiating legal action, swearing of information, giving court evidence, confirming payment of fines and swearing affidavits. Represents the City at various committees including the Property Standards Committee, Licensing Committee, the Landlord and Tenant Board and attend public open houses as required. Follows up on conditions of Committee of Adjustment variances as required.
Carrying out inspections and subsequent compliance on permits assigned. Maintains accurate and up-to-date records on all inspections made.
Requirements
The successful applicant will have 2 - 3 years of relevant experience and hold a College Diploma or University Degree in Law and Security, Police Foundations, Public Administration and or Community Planning. Additionally, the successful applicant will possess certification as a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer, Property Standards Officer, and Noise Enforcement, or able to obtain.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and computerized building records systems, such as AMANDA is a must. The successful applicant will be required to be available on standby outside of regular hours to handle urgent bylaw complaints and situations based on a rotating schedule.
A valid G driver’s license is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract with no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire, and/or no administrative driver license (ADLS) suspensions.
Police Check Requirement
This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense.
