Overview
Beech Hill Farm is a dairy farm in Princeport, Nova Scotia milking 240 cows with five delaval robots. Smit Farms is a dairy farm in Shubenacadie milking 120 cows with three delaval robots. These two farms are run by a father (Robert) Smit Farms and son (Matthew) Beech Hill Farm. Theses farms run independently but do some cropping activities together. We would like to hire an individual to work on both farms. There are 1,350 croppable acres and this individual would be active in the cultivation, planting, fertilizer, harvesting of the corn, grass and wheat. This would be the focus during spring and summer, and the other half of the year we need someone who is able to fix milking robots, alley scrapers, work on barn projects (such as fan installation, stall repair, water system upgrades). We are looking for an individual who can be part of a team, work side by side with Matt and Rob, or work independently.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on farm machinery including tractors, self propelled harvester, skidsteers, milking robots and alley scrapers.
- Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, tractors, and other machinery safely and efficiently across various farm sites.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues using schematics, diagnostic tools, and your mechanical knowledge to identify root causes quickly.
- Conduct welding, assembly, and electrical repairs on farm equipment to ensure optimal operation.
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, and equipment condition reports.
- Assist with barn improvement projects
- Use hand tools, power tools, and heavy lifting techniques safely to complete repair tasks with precision.
Requirements
- Proven mechanic experience with farm machinery or industrial equipment; experience is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of repair principles along with electrical systems troubleshooting skills.
- Hands-on experience operating heavy equipment
- Ability to read schematics and technical manuals for assembly and repair procedures.
- Skilled in welding techniques and mechanical assembly processes.
- Comfortable performing heavy lifting safely in outdoor or farm environments.
- Excellent people skills for working with team members and supporting operational needs.
This position is equipment focused, but the perfect individual would have a positive attitude around doing any work that needs to be done to keep the farm running smoothly.
Endorsement 23 for hauling heavy loads on the road required, however we can facilitate helping the individual get that.
We are looking for a capable individual; pay dependent on skills and experience.
Pay: $23.30-$30.00 per hour
