About the Role
We are hiring for a Mechatronics Engineer role to support the development of next-generation CNC machinery and automation systems. This role combines mechanical, electrical, and controls engineering, with responsibilities split between desk-based design work and hands-on prototyping and testing on the shop floor. You will work with our existing motion controller (A2MC) hardware platform while contributing to requirements, integration, and validation for the next iteration of our motion controller. The ideal candidate enjoys taking concepts from idea to working machine and thrives in a practical, hands-on engineering environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Mechanical Design
- Design mechanical assemblies, machine structures, and guarding for CNC and automation systems
- Create 3D CAD models, detail drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs)
- Select structural materials and standard machine components (linear motion, power transmission, fasteners, and hardware)
- Design and specify pneumatic circuits and components (valves, regulators, cylinders, air preparation, and routing) to support machine functions
- Ensure designs meet performance, safety, and manufacturability requirements
Electrical & Controls Integration
- Define electrical system requirements including motors, drives, sensors, pneumatic I/O, and actuators
- Collaborate with controls engineering on PLC, servo, and HMI integration for the existing motion controller (A2MC) and the next iteration of the motion controller
- Review and support electrical schematics, wiring layouts, and panel design
- Assist with system-level troubleshooting of electrical, pneumatic, and motion issues
Mechatronics & System Design
- Integrate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control elements into complete machine systems
- Support integration of cutting systems (spindles/VFDs, knife tooling, and related hardware) and their impact on motion performance and process quality
- Optimize CNC motion performance, accuracy, reliability, and serviceability
- Participate in design reviews and risk assessments
Prototyping & Shop Floor Support
- Assemble and test prototypes on the shop floor
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control issues during testing
- Support machine commissioning and validation
- Work hands-on with technicians and manufacturing teams
Testing & Validation
- Develop and execute functional and performance test plans
- Validate system accuracy, repeatability, and durability
- Document test results and recommend design improvements
- Support compliance with applicable standards and safety requirements
Manufacturing & Cost Optimization
- Support transition from prototype to Manufacturing Engineering
- Work with purchasing and manufacturing to optimize cost and lead time
- Implement design changes for ease of assembly and serviceability
- Assist with vendor evaluation and component selection
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain engineering documentation, drawings, and change records
- Support field issue investigations and root cause analysis
- Contribute to continuous improvement of existing products
- Provide technical support to service and sales teams as required
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline
Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing, CNC, or automated systems environment
- Proven experience working with CNC machines, industrial automation, and electromechanical systems
Technical Skills
Strong knowledge of CNC machining systems and manufacturing processes
Understanding of CNC cutting tool systems such as spindles and knife-based tools
Experience with PLC programming, machine controls, and industrial automation
Proficiency with SolidWorks and ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings
