Job Description:
The Registered Nurse in Acute Pain Service (APS) is an integral member of the team, working under the direct supervision of Anesthesia and guidance of the APS Clinical Nurse Specialist. The RN conducts comprehensive pre-operative assessments and planning and supports post-operative management of acute pain modalities in the Surgery Program. This role is instrumental in facilitating the delivery of patient-centered care by providing education to patients and families about pain control options; evaluating treatment effectiveness and side effects; and advocating for safe, compassionate and individualized pain relief.
Education:
- Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) program required
- PeriAnesthesia certification is an asset
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years Surgical nursing experience required
- Multimodal pain management experience is an asset
- Spinal Epidural experience is an asset
- Critical care experience is an asset
Responsibilities within Acute Pain Service (APS):
- Conducts a pre-operative pain management review and consultation with patients requiring APS post-operatively.
- Provides patient education on pain management modalities including IV Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA), epidurals, nerve blocks, and infusions (e.g. ropivacaine).
- Upon referral from physicians, participates in planning and coordination of care with Anesthesia Care Team health team members.
- Coordinates the interdisciplinary plan of care for select patient populations requiring acute pain management in the area of specialty.
- Identifies patients requiring specialized nursing expertise and coordinates services and resources.

Note: This role will be primarily weekdays but may include some evenings and weekends.
