Maintenance Assistant
Reports to: Maintenance Manager
Location: Grandview Retirement Living
Grandview Retirement Living is seeking a dependable, hands-on Maintenance Assistant to support the daily maintenance and upkeep of our retirement residence. This position is ideal for someone with practical repair skills who enjoys varied work, takes pride in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment, and provides excellent service to residents and staff.
The Maintenance Assistant will work under the direction of the Maintenance Manager and assist with general repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, suite turn-over, and responding to maintenance requests.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in general maintenance, building operations, construction, or a related position is preferred.
- Practical knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, equipment maintenance, and minor repairs.
- Basic electrical knowledge is an asset.
- A certificate or training in general maintenance, building systems, or a related field is an asset.
- Valid Ontario G-class driver’s licence.
- Willingness to learn and maintain knowledge of applicable Building Code, Fire Code, Occupational Health and Safety requirements, RHRA requirements, and other legislation relevant to retirement residences.
- Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check and TB screening

Responsibilities
- Assist with the general maintenance and upkeep of the building, grounds, equipment, and furnishings.
- Respond to maintenance requests and complete assigned work according to established priorities.
- Perform minor repairs involving plumbing, carpentry, painting, drywall, fixtures, furniture, and equipment.
- Repair or adjust taps, toilets, drains, and other plumbing fixtures within the scope of the position.
- Replace light bulbs and assist with minor lighting and electrical-related tasks that can be performed safely and within the employee’s qualifications.
- Complete minor carpentry, patching, painting, and suite preparation projects as assigned.
- Assist with scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and accurately document completed work.
- Immediately address or report defective equipment that may affect resident care or safety.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
- Keep entrances and walkways free from snow, ice, debris, and other potential hazards.
- Receive maintenance supplies and store them in designated areas.
- Assist contractors and service providers when required.
- Observe all fire, health and safety, infection prevention, and workplace policies.
- Use required personal protective equipment and follow safe work practices.
- Identify, correct when appropriate, and promptly report actual or potential hazards.
- Perform other maintenance-related duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive arm and upper-body movements.
- Ability to safely lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work from an appropriate step ladder when required.
- Ability to work in confined areas and in warm or varying temperatures.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing weather conditions.
Additional Requirements
- Must be willing to participate in an on-call rotation when required.
- Must be available to respond to occasional emergency maintenance situations.
- Some evening, weekend, or holiday work may be required based on operational needs.
- Must demonstrate flexibility, accountability, professionalism, and respect for residents’ privacy and dignity.
