Job Purpose
- Provide occupational health nursing support to employees across a large, safety-sensitive operation.
- Independently assess, triage, and manage workplace injuries, illnesses, mental health concerns, and substance-related cases through telephone and virtual consultations.
- Serve as a clinical advisor to employees, leaders, healthcare providers, and external stakeholders regarding workplace health and fitness-for-work matters.
- Manage occupational injury and illness cases from initial intake through recovery and return to work.
- Support the organization's health, safety, disability management, and workers' compensation programs while ensuring employees receive appropriate care and support.
What You Will Do
Occupational Injury & Illness Management
- Conduct virtual and telephone-based clinical assessments of workplace injuries and illnesses.
- Provide clinical triage, recommendations, and referrals based on assessment findings.
- Determine appropriate next steps, including emergency intervention, medical treatment, work restrictions, or modified duties.
- Monitor employee recovery and provide ongoing case management support.
- Maintain accurate and confidential case documentation.
Workers' Compensation & Disability Management
- Manage workplace injury claims from initial reporting through resolution.
- Liaise with Workers' Compensation Boards (WSIB/WCB), healthcare providers, employees, and operational leaders.
- Review medical documentation and clinical restrictions.
- Assess fitness for work and provide recommendations regarding accommodations and work capabilities.
- Coordinate occupational and non-occupational disability case management activities.
Return-to-Work Coordination
- Develop and implement individualized return-to-work plans.
- Identify appropriate modified duties and workplace accommodations.
- Collaborate with leaders and employees to facilitate safe and sustainable return-to-work outcomes.
- Monitor progress and adjust plans as needed to support recovery.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable legislation.
On-Call Support
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule supporting a 24/7 operation.
- Respond to workplace health and injury-related matters outside of regular business hours as required.
- Provide timely clinical guidance and decision-making support during urgent situations.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong working knowledge of occupational health principles and best practices.
- Proven ability to assess injuries and illnesses remotely and provide appropriate clinical guidance.
- Strong understanding of fitness-for-work assessments and accommodation planning.
- Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
- Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a highly autonomous environment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
- Proficiency with electronic health records, case management systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
Requirements
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) designation in good standing.
- Valid Class 5/G driver's license and ability to travel regularly between branch locations.
Experience Required
- Minimum 3-5 years of occupational health nursing experience.
- Experience supporting employees within a corporate, industrial, transportation, manufacturing, construction, or other safety-sensitive environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing workplace injuries from intake through return to work.
- Experience working directly with Workers' Compensation Boards (WSIB/WCB) and occupational injury claims.
- Experience developing and managing return-to-work and modified duty programs.
- Experience conducting clinical assessments and providing recommendations via telephone and virtual platforms.
- Experience supporting mental health and substance-related workplace cases.
- Strong case management and disability management experience.
