About COSPA
Calgary is home to eight public outdoor swimming pools across the city operated by the Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pool Association (COSPA). Each summer, COSPA welcomes hundreds of Calgarians to our pools for fun and recreation.
Now we are seeking a dynamic leader with both operational and strategic skills to join us and help lead our non-profit organization in fulfilling its mission: to operate sustainable, safe, and welcoming public outdoor pools and swimming programs effectively and efficiently for all Calgarians.
The Opportunity
COSPA is seeking a Shift Lead, Lifeguard and Swim Instructor to support the pool supervisor in day-to-day operation, and be a main point person for staff and patrons when pool supervisor is not available or present. This position will also deliver aquatic programming safely and inclusively, in alignment with Lifesaving Society standards and COSPA policy and procedures. Key Responsibilities
- Leadership and Supervision
- Point Person: Serve as the primary point person while on shift, handling all immediate issues, questions, and decision-making for staff and facility operations.
- Staff Mentoring: Provide active mentoring and positive guidance to lifeguards and instructors to develop their skills and performance.
- Daily Tasks: Enforce daily tasks completion by staff, ensuring all facility checklists, cleaning, and preparation duties are finished efficiently.
- Shift Coverage: Provide active supporting with shift coverage, stepping in for absent staff or helping to find replacements when necessary.
Aquatic Operations & Safety
- Guarding & Instructing: Perform essential facility duties including active guarding of the pool area and leading or assisting with instructing aquatic classes as needed.
- Pool Operations: Execute basic pool maintenance duties, including routine water chemistry checks and operational upkeep.
Aquatic Programming
- Deliver aquatic programming for all ages in an inclusive and safe environment.
- Prepare lesson plans and execute all administration tasks in relation to programing such as filling out rosters, writing report cards, sign in and out, and any other administrative tasks in relation to programs.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with staff and patrons
- Communicate progress, achievements, and behavioral updates of participants to parents or guardians professionally and constructively
- Follow any outline curriculum provided by the Lifesaving Society or COSPA
- Maintain a consistent schedule in order to ensure proper program delivery
- Attend all required training and complete all certifications outlined by COSPA for employment.
Lifeguard
- Ensure a safe aquatic environment by following National Lifeguard standards and/or COSPA Policies and Procedures
- Demonstrate exceptional customer service
- Are knowledgeable of Lifesaving Society and COSPA programs and services
- Perform administrative tasks, clean and organize equipment, and conduct preventative maintenance when off duty or as directed
- Keep pool area clean and organized
- Respond to emergencies according to National Lifeguard standards and COSPA Policies and Procedures
- Collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, and patrons, maintaining clear communication in all situations
- Maintain all required external and internal certifications and attend all scheduled in-service training
Administrative & Financial
- Cash Management: Accurately complete cash outs and manage the float at the end of the shift, ensuring proper balancing and documentation of daily funds.
- Reporting: Provide support in reporting administrative and compliance issues, particularly involving e-compliance documentation for incidents or policy violations.
Customer Service
- Service Excellence: Deliver outstanding customer service by addressing member and patron questions, concerns, and feedback promptly, professionally, and effectively.
Qualifications and Experience
- Intermediate First Aid and CPR-C
- National lifeguard
- Lifesaving and Swim Instructor
- Optional: Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner
- Pool Ops 1
- Vulnerable Sector check
Job Type: Fixed term contract
Pay: $18.00-$19.50 per hour
