About Knowledgehook
Knowledgehook helps school systems make measurable, lasting gains in math. We’re the implementation layer that turns assessment data into action in the classroom, built around the Short Learning Cycle: diagnose a gap, teach to it, and measure the growth. Our north-star metric isn’t logins or content consumed; it’s the number of those cycles teachers actually run, because that’s the thing that moves student outcomes.
Teachers and school leaders work the cycle through Missions, GameShows, the Focus Page, Measure Growth, and our School and District Dashboards and it works at scale: across ~98 education systems in Canada, the U.S., and Latin America, including 64 of Ontario’s 72 school boards. Districts running Knowledgehook with fidelity are posting some of the largest math gains in their regions. Niagara Catholic, for one, saw the biggest Grade 3 and 6 proficiency gains in Ontario: an 8-point jump.
We’re building toward something big: 13 million students reaching grade level in math.
The Role
We are seeking a seasoned Software Architect to lead our platform's technical evolution across its entire lifecycle - spanning cloud infrastructure, database management, and the core C# APIs and applications vital to our community of educators and learners. This position is fundamentally hands-on, requiring a deep technical focus on architecting and developing solutions while overseeing DevOps and establishing the engineering excellence that defines how our entire team operates.
Please include “Math is awesome” in your resume.
What You'll Do
-
Own the architecture of our platform end to end; a multi-region deployment across hybrid on-premise and cloud infrastructure, built to meet data-residency requirements around the world.
-
Set the technical direction for major platform and infrastructure initiatives, and make the build-vs-adopt decisions that keep us solving the right problems the right way.
-
Own how we build, test, and ship - continuously improving our CI/CD, developer workflow, and release process.
-
Guide the evolution of our backend systems and data architecture toward clean, maintainable designs that scale with the product.
-
Provide senior technical oversight of our databases and data platform - performance, reliability, and integrity.
-
Lead our production strategy, including proactive monitoring and reliable deployment practices that keep our platform fast and dependable.
-
Champion security, quality, and engineering standards across the team
-
Own site reliability end to end; LOs/SLIs, error budgets, incident response, and postmortems.
-
Proactively identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks across the full stack (SQL plans, API latency, frontend load) using telemetry, profiling, and load testing
-
Mentor engineers and provide DevOps oversight across our services and frontends, raising the bar for how the whole team works.
What We're Looking For
Over 8 - 12 years of experience developing and managing production software, demonstrating a proven track record of architectural ownership for systems at significant scale.
Mastery of C# and the .NET ecosystem, with the ability to navigate seamlessly between EF Core and complex SQL query plans to optimize performance.
Robust SQL Server and DBA expertise, including advanced schema design, performance tuning, migrations, and high-availability configurations like Availability Groups.
Practical DevOps and infrastructure skills in hybrid environments - proficient with Azure, Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform or Ansible, and automated CI/CD pipelines.
Strategic technical judgment for system evolution, balanced by the wisdom to choose simplicity over complexity when determining when to implement message buses or containers.
Experience managing production environments and a commitment to proactive observability
A foundational focus on security and compliance, with familiarity with SOC 2 and other essential standards.
Hands-on SRE experience instrumenting with metrics/logs/traces (App Insights/Azure Monitor, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana), setting SLOs, and resolving bottlenecks before users hit them.
Track record of performance tuning under load - profiling, load/stress testing, capacity planning.
Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with Angular, React, Node.js, containerization strategies, and messaging architectures like RabbitMQ.
Ability to handle shifting priorities, emerging P0s and a fast moving startup culture
