Over the Rainbow Children’s Centre is seeking an experienced, dependable, and organized Cook to join our childcare team.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys preparing nutritious meals, is comfortable cooking in large quantities, and understands the importance of food allergies, dietary restrictions, food safety, and proper sanitation when preparing food for young children.
Key Responsibilities
The Cook will be responsible for:
- Preparing and cooking nutritious morning snacks, lunches, and afternoon snacks for approximately 100 children
- Following the Centre’s established menus, recipes, and portion requirements
- Preparing appropriate food substitutions for children with allergies, intolerances, religious/cultural dietary requirements, and other dietary restrictions
- Maintaining strict awareness of all anaphylactic allergies and individual dietary restrictions/requirements
- Preventing cross-contamination during food preparation, cooking, serving, and storage
- Ensuring meals and snacks are prepared and delivered to classrooms according to the Centre’s daily schedule
- Receiving and properly storing food deliveries
- Monitoring food inventory and advising management when supplies need to be ordered
- Properly labelling, dating, rotating, and storing food
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen throughout the day
- Washing and sanitizing dishes, cookware, equipment, counters, and food preparation areas
- Maintaining appropriate food temperatures and completing required food-safety documentation
- Following all Centre policies and applicable public-health and food-safety requirements
- Working cooperatively and respectfully with educators, supervisors, and management
Qualifications & Requirements
The successful candidate should:
- Have previous experience working as a cook, preferably preparing meals in large quantities
- Be confident preparing meals and snacks for approximately 100 children
- Have a strong understanding of food allergies, anaphylaxis, cross-contamination, and safe food substitutions
- Hold a valid Food Handler Certification
- Have knowledge of safe food-handling and sanitation practices
- Be organized and able to manage multiple meal and snack preparation deadlines
- Be dependable, punctual, and able to work independently
- Be comfortable working in a busy childcare environment
- Be able to lift and carry food supplies, pots, and kitchen equipment as required
- Be willing to obtain/provide all documentation required to work in a licensed childcare setting
Pay: $20.00-$24.00 per hour
