The Registered Practical Nurse staff, report to the Director of Care. They shall provide professional nursing care to all residents and supervise all care given. The RPN is required to assess all resident needs, participate in planning, implementing and evaluating the care programs. The RPN will supervise all Wellness Centre staff.
Qualifications
1) Current Certificate of Competence as a Register Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario (see policy: College of Nurses Annual Registration).
2) Medication Administration course (if medications to be administered).
3) Good physical and mental health and free from communicable diseases.
4) Knowledge of the Nursing best practices and nursing diagnosis.
5) Certified in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and First Aid.
6) Good communication and leadership skills.
7) Familiar with "Commitment to Residents" and “Code of Ethics” as set by Ontario Retirement Communities Association.
8) Willingness to update and keep current their knowledge of changing regulations,
practices and procedures as required by the College of Nurses.
Functions
1) Provide directions and supervision of all Residents, Care Attendants, and Personal Support Workers
2) Assess residents' conditions by recognizing signs and symptoms and where necessary initiates remedial health measures and Report to Director of Care
3) Contacting resident's attending physician when there is a change in resident's physical or mental condition.
4) Responsible to ensure safekeeping of pharmacy and med cart keys.
5) Responsible for administration of medications and treatments as ordered by resident's physician within his/her limitations.
6) Promotes good health habits/Health Teaching
7) Deals courteously with all staff, residents, resident’s families and visitors.
8) Assists with admission and discharge of residents.
9) Maintain liaison with families of residents.
10) Ensures medical records are accurate, up to date and completed in a timely fashion
11) Completed all assessments and documentation as required
12) Organizing and ensuring medications are reviewed every three months where medications are provided.
13) Ensures that all monthly weights and blood pressures, on all residents are completed and documented.
14) Provides any and all additional care as directed and provides documentation to support same.
15) Participate in fire and evacuation drills as required by operational guidelines
16) Knowledgeable of the Landlord and Tenant Act under Residents Rights Act.
17) Ensuring policies and procedures are reviewed every three years.
18) Ensuring nursing documentation is complete as per College of Nurses' Nursing Documentation Best Practice guidelines.
19) Assist with arranging transportation for residents.
20) Answer call bells promptly and assist residents where necessary.
21) Ordering medications from Pharmacy as per Doctor's orders.
22) Receiving medications and storing medications safely.
23) Serve and supervise at meals - assist with resident satisfaction as required.
24) Adhere to all established policies and procedures.
25) Responsible for making the appropriate plans for discharge as necessary.
26) Complete incident reports where necessary.
27) Supervising resident's personal hygiene and bathing as per schedule or
assisting when necessary.
28) Assist residents with ambulation when necessary
29) Provide for Emergency medical care.
30) Responsible for maintaining accurate records for "additional care" if applicable
31) Ensuring staffing levels are maintained while on duty: calling in staff
32) Ensuring a resident care plan is established and reviewed every three months.
33) Access, facilitate, support and orientate community agencies and/ or resources.
34) Aware of role and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
35) Rotational on-call for Director of Care support off duty.
