Changing lives for over two decades, the YES Shelter for Youth and Families is at an exciting time of growth and change in the provision of shelter, education, and transitional supports in Peterborough. The Classroom Program Support Worker is a part-time position of 22.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday, and follows the school board calendar from September to June of each year. The Classroom Support Worker provides support and advocacy to clients attending the alternative classroom at Carriage House School. In partnership with Kawartha Pine Ridge School Board (KPR) and Peterborough Alternative and Continuing Education (PACE), the Carriage House School offers a collaborative program in an educational setting. The Classroom Program Support Worker monitors classroom behaviour in order to maintain a positive, barrier-free learning environment.
Responsibilities
· Motivate students to attend school, engage in their educational plan, and maintain their school schedule
· Maintain an awareness of potential conflicts or dangerous situations within the classroom, and intervene appropriately and effectively when the need arises. Ensure the overall safety of the classroom by never leaving the classroom unattended while students are in the classroom
· Work one-on-one with students if the need arises
· Support students in developing and maintaining goals and aspirations
· Advocate for clients in order to address barriers to attending school, achieving at school, and completing goals
· Liaise between classroom and YES Shelter ex. Scheduling and appointments, shelter client case records and incident reporting as needed
· Identify student’s immediate needs ex. Food, shelter, urgent healthcare needs and clothing, and make contact with community services to help address these needs
· Participate in Case Management and Outreach Team meetings on a weekly basis
· Maintain accurate and up-to-date Release of Information forms, as well as a weekly log of student updates
· Adhere to strict privacy legislation. The Classroom Program Support Worker is to ensure that no student (client) information is released without explicit consent
· Ensure that the classroom facilities are safe and clean i.e. take garbage out, wipe counters / desks down
· Document and communicate and Health and Safety Concerns to the Joint Health and Safety Committee
· Participate in monthly Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings as a representative of the Carriage House School
Qualifications
· Human Service Diploma, coupled with two years of demonstrated experience working with marginalized youth
· Knowledge of adolescent development, and specific issues related to youth homelessness
· Sound knowledge of complexities of oppression, diversity and poverty
· Sound knowledge of and practice in harm reduction practices and safety planning
· Knowledge of community resources
· Experience in building successful partnerships and efficacy in navigating systems
· Proven ability to build rapport with diverse youth (including LGBT, Aboriginal, racialized, homeless/street-involved youth) and to undertake individual goal-setting/planning from a client-driven and strengths-based approach
Certifications
· WHMIS (or equivalent)
· Emergency First Aid & CPR,
· Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (or equivalent)
· Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
· Criminal records check (with vulnerable sectors search) required
· Child welfare check required
