AV Design Engineer
Commercial technology systems designed to perform—and supported for the long term.
NDS Integration designs, installs, and supports commercial technology systems for hospitality, retail, commercial, and institutional clients across Canada and the United States. Our work spans audiovisual, digital signage, control, network and wireless infrastructure, structured cabling, surveillance, and related connected technologies.
We are known for practical designs, disciplined execution, responsive support, and long-term client relationships. Our standard is simple: Better. Every. Day.
The Opportunity
NDS Integration is seeking an experienced AV Design Engineer to turn client requirements, consultant documents, site conditions, and sales concepts into complete, accurate, and buildable audiovisual system designs.
The Design Engineer will take technical ownership of the solution from discovery and sales handoff through documentation, procurement, installation, programming, commissioning, and closeout. This person must balance performance, reliability, usability, budget, serviceability, and constructability.
A strong NDS design must work for the technicians installing it, the programmers commissioning it, the service team supporting it, and the client operating it every day.
Key Responsibilities
· Design commercial audiovisual and connected technology systems for restaurants, hotels, retail environments, educational facilities, offices, and other commercial or institutional spaces.
· Translate client needs, drawings, specifications, site reports, and sales concepts into complete technical solutions.
· Design systems that may include distributed audio, background music, sound reinforcement, video distribution, digital signage, projection, conferencing, control systems, lighting control, and AV networking.
· Select products based on performance, compatibility, availability, budget, warranty, standardization, and long-term supportability.
· Complete technical calculations including loudspeaker coverage, amplifier loading, display sizing, viewing distances, projection requirements, cable distances, bandwidth, rack capacity, heat load, and power requirements.
· Identify technical risks, scope gaps, design conflicts, and required assumptions before a project is released for procurement or construction.
· Develop cost-conscious alternatives and value-engineering options without compromising the system's essential performance or reliability.
Drawings and Documentation
Produce clear, coordinated, and installation-ready design documentation, including:
· System signal-flow drawings and single-line diagrams
· Floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, and equipment layouts
· Rack elevations, cable schedules, device schedules, and bills of materials
· Mounting details and installation requirements
· Network, IP, power, conduit, backing, cooling, and infrastructure requirements
· Control-system narratives, functional descriptions, scopes of work, and technical proposals
· Review architectural, electrical, mechanical, millwork, structural, and consultant drawings for coordination issues.
· Maintain design revisions and ensure the current documentation is clearly communicated to project stakeholders.
· Prepare complete design packages that technicians and subcontractors can install with minimal ambiguity.
Sales and Estimating Support
· Participate in discovery meetings and help define client needs, operational requirements, and project constraints.
· Support sales with system concepts, equipment selection, technical narratives, budgets, and proposal development.
· Review estimates and bills of materials for technical accuracy, completeness, labour assumptions, and alignment with the proposed scope.
· Clearly document exclusions, assumptions, allowances, alternates, and client responsibilities.
· Assist with tender reviews, RFIs, substitutions, and technical responses.
· Ensure that what NDS sells can be delivered within the approved scope, budget, and schedule.
Project Delivery Support
· Lead the technical handoff from sales and design to project management, procurement, field installation, programming, and service.
· Respond to technical questions from project managers, technicians, programmers, clients, consultants, IT teams, and trades.
· Review substitutions and change requests for compatibility and their effect on the complete system.
· Attend site surveys, coordination meetings, mock-ups, testing, and commissioning activities when required.
· Review installation progress, identify deviations from the approved design, and support deficiency resolution.
· Incorporate approved field changes into complete as-built documentation.
Standards and Continuous Improvement
· Develop and maintain NDS design standards, drawing templates, approved products, engineering checklists, and documentation practices.
· Create repeatable system approaches for multi-location hospitality and retail clients.
· Improve consistency, procurement efficiency, installation quality, serviceability, and lifecycle performance through thoughtful standardization.
· Participate in project retrospectives, apply lessons learned, and stay current with AV technologies, manufacturer platforms, networked AV, control systems, and industry standards.
