Job Summary
Stellar Recruitment is looking for a 2nd Engineer (Relief Duty) to join a marine engineering team based in Delta, BC. This role is ideal for an experienced Marine Engineer with a valid Transport Canada 2nd Class ticket and hands-on experience operating and maintaining marine machinery and equipment. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently, troubleshooting machinery, and supporting a range of modern and older vessels. This is a full-time, unionized position with variable one-week rotations and the potential for significant opportunities to progress within the engineering team. Responsibilities:
- Take responsibility for the engineering watch and the safe operation of vessel machinery and equipment
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair marine diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and auxiliary equipment
- Maintain propulsion, auxiliary, safety, and pollution-control equipment in accordance with the planned maintenance system
- Coordinate onboard repairs and external contractors
- Liaise with engineering teams and superintendents to support repairs, inspections, surveys, and dry-docking activities
- Conduct machinery inspections and maintain accurate maintenance records, Engine Logbooks, and Oil Record Books
- Respond to machinery breakdowns and provide detailed fault analysis to support vessel recovery
- Participate in emergency response, safety activities, hazard assessments, and incident investigations
- Support the maintenance and testing of standby and emergency systems
- Mentor and support junior engineering personnel
- Ensure compliance with Transport Canada, Classification Society, company, and safety requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
- Valid Transport Canada 2nd Class Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency – required
- Minimum 5 years of experience as an Engineering Officer onboard vessels
- Experience with engineering duties on vessels 400 GT or larger
- Experience on similar vessel types, ideally passenger ferries, tugs, ATBs, offshore vessels, workboats, or other comparable vessels
- Experience with medium-speed diesel engines is strongly preferred
- Strong hands-on experience troubleshooting and maintaining marine diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems
- Experience working independently or as part of a small engineering team is highly valued
- Experience as the sole engineer onboard or making independent engineering decisions would be a strong asset
- Strong understanding of Transport Canada and Classification Society requirements
- Knowledge of planned maintenance systems, vessel inspections, dry-docking, and marine safety procedures
- Valid MEDs, Marine Basic First Aid, and Marine Medical
- Strong English communication skills, both verbal and written
- Basic MS Office skills
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Must be comfortable working in a unionized environment
- Must be comfortable with variable one-week rotations, including occasional night shifts and last-minute coverage
- Must be able to work fully onsite in Delta, BC
Hourly rate: $63.34/hour
Schedule: Full-time hours with variable relief rotations, typically one-week rotations
Location: Delta, BC
Important: Candidates must already hold a valid Transport Canada 2nd Class Marine Engineer ticket. International certificates requiring conversion to a Canadian ticket will not meet the requirement.
