Summary
Locomotive Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient movement of railcars within a private rail yard. Working under strict rules compliance, the Engineer operates the locomotive based on movement instructions provided by the Conductor, ensuring cars are switched, spotted, and prepared for loading, unloading, and outbound departure
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a locomotive within a private rail yard.
- Perform general yard switching in coordination with the Conductor.
- Spot railcars into the facility and pull loads/empties as required.
- Build outbound lifts for collection by Class 1 railway.
- Follow all movement instructions via radio communication.
- Maintain strict adherence to safety rules, operating procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct basic locomotive inspections and report defects.
- Work collaboratively with the Conductor to maintain efficient yard flow.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Shift hours vary depending on location.
- Driving to site locations will be required.
- Outdoor, industrial environment with exposure to weather and rail‑related hazards.
- Compensation for travel to site if required.
Qualifications
- Fluent with CROR (Canadian Railway Operating Rules)
- Experience operating locomotives, preferably GP‑38 or similar.
- Strong understanding of safe train handling and yard operations.
- Ability to work safely with minimal supervision.
- Effective radio communication skills.
- Physically capable of climbing, walking uneven surfaces, and working in all weather conditions.
Pay: $30.00-$33.00 per hour
