Jakes Construction Ltd. is looking for an experienced Survey Data Technician to join our Survey team.
This is a hands-on technical role supporting heavy civil construction projects through the processing, management, and quality control of survey data. You’ll work closely with our field survey crews, Survey Manager, and project teams to turn raw field information into accurate drawings, surfaces, models, stakeout files, machine control data, and other deliverables used to keep our projects moving.
We’re looking for someone who is technically strong, organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with a high volume of survey data in a fast-paced construction environment.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Download, process, and reduce raw survey data from GNSS, robotic total stations, and data collectors.
- Process and maintain survey data, calculations, drawings, and project records using Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and related software.
- Build and maintain digital terrain models (DTMs), surfaces, and 3D models for construction staking, design support, and machine control.
- Prepare stakeout files, cut sheets, and machine control files for field crews.
- Complete QA/QC checks to ensure survey data is accurate, complete, and consistent.
- Complete topographic, as-built, quantity, volume, and earthworks calculations and reporting.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, construction plans, design models, and survey information.
- Coordinate with field crews, project staff, and the Survey Manager to troubleshoot discrepancies and confirm project requirements.
- Maintain organized digital survey records, field information, drawings, and project files.
- Assist with exhibit drawings, plans, and other survey-related drafting as required.
- Provide occasional field support, including assisting with GNSS and total station equipment.
What We’re Looking For
- 2–4 years of experience in survey data processing, drafting, or a related civil/heavy civil construction role.
- Experience working in surveying and construction.
- Proficiency with Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, or similar survey processing and drafting software.
- Strong understanding of GNSS, total station, and data collector workflows.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, construction plans, design models, and survey information.
- Experience completing volume and earthworks calculations, quantity takeoffs, and as-built documentation.
- Strong computer, organizational, and data-management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to prioritize competing deadlines and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and reliable transportation.
Nice to Have
- Survey technical certificate or diploma.
- Experience with Topcon and Trimble equipment and field software, including Pocket 3D, Magnet Field, and/or Trimble Siteworks.
- Experience with GIS or drone/RPAS data processing.
- Additional AutoCAD experience.
Work Environment
This position is primarily focused on survey data and technical deliverables, with occasional visits to active construction sites. Some field support may be required, including working outdoors in varying weather conditions and occasionally lifting or carrying survey equipment.
Overtime may be required depending on project needs.
