Online High School English Teacher – Grades 9–12
Remote | Part-Time | Flexible Hours
Apex Academy Online is looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable High School English teacher to teach Ontario Secondary School credit courses in a flexible, online environment.
We are looking for a teacher who is comfortable supporting students across Grades 9–12 English. Experience teaching the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OLC4O) would be particularly valuable, as many of our international students require the course as part of their pathway toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
Please note that this position is for an Ontario high school English teacher rather than an ESL teaching position. While experience supporting English language learners is certainly an asset, applicants should have experience teaching secondary school English curriculum, including reading, writing, oral communication, media studies and literary analysis.
Courses are delivered asynchronously, allowing teachers to work remotely and with a high degree of flexibility.
Our course content and structure are already in place, so you won't be expected to build courses from scratch. Teachers are provided with established course materials and templates, along with ongoing support and guidance from our academic team and instructional designer.
What we're looking for
The successful candidate will:
- Hold OCT certification, or have equivalent experience teaching high school English
- Have strong knowledge of secondary English curriculum and assessment
- Understand and follow OCT professional standards
- Have a working knowledge of Ontario's Growing Success assessment and evaluation framework
- Be comfortable supporting students with a range of learning styles, abilities and educational backgrounds
- Be confident supporting international students studying toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
- Help students develop their written communication, reading comprehension, critical thinking and analysis
- Build positive, supportive and professional relationships with students in an online learning environment
- Provide clear, constructive and timely feedback on student work
- Communicate reliably with students and the Apex Academy team
Experience teaching OLC4O is an asset, as is previous experience with Learning Management Systems such as Canvas, Brightspace or Moodle, but neither is essential.
We are much more interested in strong subject knowledge and good teaching than technical expertise. Training and technical support will be provided.
Who should apply?
We welcome applications from qualified high school English teachers at all stages of their careers. This opportunity may be particularly well suited to:
- Current English teachers looking for additional flexible teaching work
- Part-time teachers
- Retired English teachers who would like to continue working with students
- Newly qualified teachers looking to build their experience
- Teacher education students in their final year of study with English as a teachable subject
Experience working with international students or English language learners is welcome, but applicants should have a background in secondary English education rather than ESL instruction alone.
If you enjoy helping students become stronger readers, writers and communicators, and would like the flexibility of teaching from home, we'd be happy to hear from you.
