Changepain, an interdisciplinary community-based pain clinic is seeking to add a part time or full time Counsellor.
Job Title: Counsellor. Direct patient care with opportunities for learning and growth in ketamine assisted psychotherapy, research, medical-legal and complex care team assessments.
Location: Remote, or hybrid virtual and onsite at our Burnaby location.
Start: Flexible full, part-time and flex hours available, start as soon as possible. Minimum 2 shifts of 6 hours/week.
Wage: Competitive independent contractor splits combined with hourly based work for specialized services.
Reports to: Director of Integrative Health

Job Description:
Mental health is a key pillar in our integrated model. As a member of our team you will be receiving direct referrals from various sources including: our Medical Services, Integrative Pain Services, Medical legal Team, and Private Pay Programs and services. You will be responsible for direct patient care including assessment, diagnosis/impressions, and management of individual cases. Group offerings are also available. A broad range of clients will be received with varying functional capacity, disability, comorbidities and injury history.
In addition to direct patient care, funded participation in unique forward-thinking initiatives are available:
- Collaborative care with our Anesthesiologists and critical care nurses in delivering ketamine assisted psychotherapy.
- Participation in provincially and nationally funded research, projects.
- Opportunities for private pay complex care multidisciplinary team assessments and medical legal reports are available.

Summary of Responsibilities may include:
- Collaboration and consultation with the Changepain medical and allied health teams.
- Deliver standardized objective mental health assessments
- Direct patient care including assessment, diagnosis/impressions, and management of individual cases. Fully remote or hybrid option available.
- Content development and delivery of group-based visits addressing issues of mood disorders and suffering in the context of pain.
- Multidisciplinary Team Based assessments and report generation. In collaboration with our medical and allied health team members you will assess and develop comprehensive care plans for complex care patients. Delivery of care may also be required.
- Support group-based care initiatives
- Option for delivery of direct counselling for patients undergoing IV Ketamine/Lidocaine for Depression and/or Pain
- Report writing for ICBC, third party payers and medical legal reports (as requested).
- Record keeping, report writing, patient management and team-based communication into our shared electronic medical record and other applicable secure platforms.
- Optional but encouraged, engagement in various relevant research opportunities
Qualifications & Skills:
- You are a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) in good standing with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors and the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA/CCC certification) or a Registered Social Worker in good standing with the College.
- You hold a Masters's degree or doctorate degree in psychology, psychiatry, social work, or clinical counselling psychology, a graduate degree in clinical psychology, neuropsychology, or counselling psychology. (you must meet this standard as per the Insurance vehicle regulation/ICBC)
- You currently are or you can register with ICBC for counselling direct billing (this is a mandatory requirement)
- You have an active City of Burnaby Business License (we will support you with this once onboarded)
- Experience providing direct psychological assessment and treatment services. A minimum of 1 year of related experience in delivering direct clinical patient care requested. Mentorship is available.
- Commercial liability and 2 million dollars of personal liability insurance
- Experience with relevant populations including chronic pain, MVA, Veterans, addictions/substance use, pre and post surgical, post traumatic stress disorder, mood disorders, and/or concussion.
- Experience as a group facilitator or educator is ideal.
- Specialized training in one or more the following therapies is an asset: CBT, Somatic Experiencing, Pain Reprocessing Therapy, Sensory Motor Psychotherapy, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy, neuropsychology and/or pain neuroscience, and additional trauma therapy training and experience.
- An interest in evidence-based care, integration and pain.
- A desire to develop a long-term clientele and career in this position.
- You work from a Trauma-Informed Practice, cultivate kindness and compassion for all clients being served.
