Commercial Roofing Construction Safety Officer - Burnaby, BC
Duron Specialty Contracting Group Ltd. is currently looking for a CSO to join our Commercial Roofing Division located at 6850 Antrim Ave, Burnaby, BC.
What You’ll Be Doing and With Who:
As our Roofing Construction Safety Officer (CSO), you’ll play a key role in Duron’s Health & Safety program, working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and field crews to ensure work is planned and performed safely and in accordance with WorkSafeBC requirements, Duron policies, client requirements, and project-specific safety plans.
- Conduct regular site safety inspections and document findings and corrective actions.
- Prepare, review, and maintain FLHAs, JHAs/JRAs, site-specific safety binders, fall protection plans, toolbox talks, orientations, and related safety documentation.
- Monitor compliance with WorkSafeBC requirements and Duron’s Health & Safety Program.
- Inspect fall protection systems, guardrails, control zones, warning lines, anchors, lifelines, ladders, scaffolding, and other access systems.
- Verify required PPE and safe work procedures are being followed.
- Work directly with crews to identify hazards and implement practical corrective measures.
- Monitor roofing-specific hazards, including working at heights and leading edges, roof openings and skylights, torch-applied roofing/hot work, material handling and rooftop storage, cranes and hoisting, mobile equipment and boom lifts, changing weather conditions, and protection of the public and occupied buildings.
- Participate in incident and near-miss investigations and follow through on corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate inspection, training, incident, and safety records.
- Coordinate with General Contractors, Prime Contractors, consultants, and client safety representatives.
- Lead project safety meetings, orientations, emergency-response planning, and first-aid coordination.
- Address unsafe conditions or work practices promptly and escalate serious concerns when required.
- Promote a strong safety culture through field presence, coaching, communication, and practical leadership — not simply enforcement.
Who We’re Looking For:
We’re looking for someone who understands that an effective CSO works with the crews, not against them. You need to be confident enough to address unsafe work when necessary while remaining approachable, practical, and respected in the field.
- Valid Construction Safety Officer (CSO) certification or equivalent recognized safety training.
- 2–3+ years of construction safety experience preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, particularly fall protection and working-at-heights requirements.
- Familiarity with hot work, cranes/rigging, mobile equipment, WHMIS, and construction-site access requirements.
- Commercial roofing experience or experience working directly with roofing crews is a significant asset.
- Occupational First Aid certification is an asset.
- Valid BC driver’s licence and ability to travel between projects throughout the Lower Mainland.
- Comfortable accessing active rooftops and construction areas.
- Strong organizational, time-management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Self-motivated and comfortable working in a fast-paced construction environment.
