We are expanding our Winnipeg engineering team as we move advanced field-based sensing and autonomous technologies from development into commercial production.
The Opportunity
AIRM is looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical development of rugged, field-deployed sensing and autonomous systems.
This is a hands-on senior engineering role with responsibility across the full product lifecycle, from concept development and prototyping through detailed design, testing, manufacturing, production release, field deployment, and ongoing product improvement.
You will work closely with electrical engineers, software engineers, data scientists, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to develop the physical systems that support AIRM’s sensing, autonomous, and AI technologies.
This is a full-time, in-person position based in our Winnipeg office. Candidates must currently reside in Manitoba.
We are looking for someone who is highly technical, practical, organized, and comfortable taking ownership of complex engineering challenges from concept through commercialization.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the mechanical design and development of rugged product enclosures, mechanical structures, assemblies, and electromechanical systems.
- Own mechanical product development from concept through prototyping, verification, production release, field deployment, and ongoing improvement.
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, layouts, manufacturing drawings, specifications, and production documentation using SolidWorks.
- Design outdoor enclosures and mechanical systems capable of operating reliably under demanding environmental conditions.
- Work closely with electrical and hardware engineers to integrate sensors, electronics, wiring, connectors, cabling, power systems, and related components.
- Support the mechanical integration of sensing and autonomous system components.
- Perform structural, thermal, environmental, and mechanical design analysis.
- Select appropriate materials, components, manufacturing processes, and suppliers.
- Work directly with injection moulders, metal fabricators, machine shops, and other manufacturing partners.
- Coordinate and conduct design verification, environmental testing, and product validation.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, manufacturing, and field-performance issues and work with suppliers to resolve defects and production challenges.
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials, part numbering, revision control, engineering change documentation, and production releases.
- Support procurement, inventory management, receiving and inspection, assembly procedures, test fixtures, and manufacturing documentation.
- Contribute to design for manufacturing, product commercialization, and production scale-up.
- Prepare project plans, schedules, technical documentation, and progress updates.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technical staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- 10+ years of professional engineering experience, preferably involving electronic, electromechanical, sensing, autonomous, or other physical technology products.
- Demonstrated experience taking physical products from concept through manufacturing and production.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, or eligible for registration in Manitoba.
- Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable mechanical CAD software.
- Strong experience designing rugged electronic products, electromechanical systems, or outdoor equipment.
- Demonstrated experience with injection-moulded plastic component design.
- Experience designing with sheet metal, machined components, fabricated structures, fasteners, seals, connectors, and related mechanical components.
- Strong knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly.
- Experience with engineering documentation and configuration management, including Bills of Materials, revision control, production release, and engineering change processes.
- Strong analytical and hands-on problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently own complex engineering problems and make sound technical decisions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience leading or mentoring engineers or technical staff.
- Must currently reside in Manitoba and be able to work in person from AIRM’s Winnipeg office.
