Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the Royal Alexandra Hospital provides tertiary-level services for youth and families navigating complex emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges. Care is delivered through a multidisciplinary, patient centered approach. Reporting to the Unit Manager or designate, the Mental Health Aide supports direct patient care by assisting with hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs, including direct observation. Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the Mental Health Aide helps maintain a safe therapeutic environment for patients, families, staff, and visitors while adhering to care plans, hospital policies and established procedures. The successful candidate demonstrates strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills, active listening, and the ability to establish and maintain professional, respectful relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. This role requires emotional regulation, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm and focused when responding to challenging situations. The Mental Health Aide collaborates effectively with the interdisciplinary team to support patient care and safety and therapeutic outcomes. Supporting patient engagement, empowerment, and participation in treatment are key components of this position. The successful candidate contributes to a positive therapeutic milieu and promotes a safe, respectful, and recovery-oriented environment for children, adolescents, and their families.
As a Mental Health Aide, you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team to provide a welcoming and safe care environment. You will assist in the provision of direct patient/client care as delegated in a person-centered, recovery oriented and safe manner. In this position, you will assist and / or promote independence to patients/clients in completing activities of daily living as well as assisting other health professionals with providing treatments and observing and reporting relevant patient/client information to professional staff. You will assist new patients/clients and families with orientation, and assist in the general support of the work area.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of Grade 12. A combination of education and experience satisfactory to the employer will also be considered.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Completion of a Mental Health First Aid certificate required. Current Basic Cardias Life Support – Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. Demonstrated English language proficiency required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Personal Care Aide (PCA) certification or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a hospital-based mental health setting. Experience in working with child and adolescent mental health populations preferred. Current Nonviolent Crisis (NCI) certification.
