Calgary Ocular Prosthetics is looking for a detail-oriented, highly skilled lab technician to work alongside ocularists in our specialized laboratory.
The successful candidate will complete in-house training in ocular prosthetic fabrication. After successfully completing training, the technician will perform detailed fabrication work under the supervision of the ocularists.
Responsibilities
- Assist the ocularists with the fabrication of custom ocular prostheses.
- Complete preparation, shaping, processing, polishing, and other fabrication-related laboratory work under ocularist supervision.
- Assist with mould preparation, casting, and other laboratory procedures.
- Use hand tools and laboratory equipment safely and accurately.
- Maintain a high standard of precision, cleanliness, and organization in the laboratory.
- Inventory laboratory supplies and communicate supply needs to the appropriate team member.
- Follow laboratory procedures, quality-control standards, and workplace safety requirements.
- Safely handle, store, and dispose of chemicals and other laboratory materials in accordance with WHMIS requirements.
Qualifications
- Fine Arts degree or diploma required.
- Excellent artistic ability, with advanced skills in painting and sculpture.
- Exceptional attention to detail, colour, shape, proportion, and symmetry.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
- Patient, organized, reliable, and comfortable with detailed hands-on work.
- Ability to follow precise instructions and work independently and as part of a small team.
- Current WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain it.
- Experience with hyperrealism, academic realism, and traditional realism in oil and acrylic is strongly preferred.
Ocular prosthetics experience is not required. Comprehensive in-house training will be provided.
Portfolio Requirements
To be considered for future openings, candidates must submit:
- A current resume.
- An artistic portfolio containing a minimum of 10 images demonstrating advanced skill in painting and sculpture.
- Proof of Authorship: At least 2 of the submitted artworks must include clear proof of authorship (e.g., in-progress work-in-progress photos, time-lapse video, or photos showing you actively working on the piece with your face/workspace visible).
Note on Portfolio Standards: We specifically evaluate for high-precision techniques, including Hyperrealism, Academic Realism, and traditional Realism in oil and acrylic. Applications submitted without a portfolio meeting these standards will not be considered or retained, and due to the volume of inquiries we receive, we are unable to offer individual feedback or ongoing consultation regarding entering the field.
