Kamloops Family Resources Society (The Tree) is seeking a qualified professional to fill a flexible position (up to 35 hours/week) for a Trauma-Informed Counsellor in our peer-driven organization. This role runs until March 31, 2027, with the possibility of renewal based on funding.
About us:
We are a peer-driven, trauma-informed, and culturally safe organization supporting women and families affected by substance use, trauma, poverty, and systemic barriers. Our counselling program is designed to meet women where they are—offering in-person, virtual, or community-based counselling options to increase accessibility and comfort.
Qualifications:
We will consider individuals eligible to be registered with a professional association in BC (Registered Social Worker, Registered Clinical Counsellor, Registered Nurse, Canadian Certified Counsellor, Certified Addictions Counsellor etc.). Applicants must have two years recent related experience counselling and supporting individuals with substance use, mental health and/or perinatal mental health issues. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience in a social service or healthcare setting will also be considered.
Position Highlights:
- Deliver one-on-one and group counselling with a trauma-informed, harm-reduction, and strength-based approach.
- Provide support to women and mothers navigating substance use, mental health, and recovery-related challenges.
- Collaborate with peer staff and community partners to enhance participant support.
- Clinical supervision provided, with opportunities for additional training and peer collaboration.
- No session limits—counselling is offered based on participant needs, not fixed program restrictions.
- Flexible schedule. May include some evening work.

Qualifications:
- Registered or eligible for registration with a professional body (RCC, RSW, CCC, RN, etc.).
- Minimum 2 years recent experience in substance use, mental health, or perinatal counselling.
- Strong grounding in trauma-informed and culturally safe practices.
- Experience with EMDR, CBT, DBT, or motivational interviewing an asset.
- Knowledge of intergenerational trauma, child protection systems, and harm reduction principles preferred.
Requirements:
- Vulnerable sector criminal record check.
- Cultural safety and trauma-informed care training (or willingness to complete).
- Crisis intervention skills and group facilitation experience.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and advocacy abilities.
- Theoretical knowledge base
- Practice individual and group therapy from a harm reduction, strengths-based approach
- Possess superior facilitation, crisis intervention, counselling and inter-personal relationship skills
- Understanding of intergenerational trauma
- Strong communications skills
- Working knowledge of case management, case conferencing, treatment plan development, aftercare planning, client records management
- Experience working/advocating or supporting families facing legal and child welfare issues
Position:
- Reports to Executive Director
- 5 days per week
- Clinical supervision will be provided
