Position:
Under the direction of the Justice Team Leader, the Probation and Parole Officer is responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of probation, parole, and conditional sentence services for Walpole Island First Nation. Services are provided in accordance with Ministry of the Solicitor General (formerly Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services) policies and guidelines, as well as applicable Federal and Provincial legislation.
The incumbent provides case management, supervision, and enforcement services to adult offenders involved in the criminal justice system, including those under the supervision of the courts and the Ontario Board of Parole. This role supports rehabilitation, public safety, and reintegration through report preparation, monitoring of court-ordered conditions, development and delivery of programming, and coordination of community-based resources.
All services are delivered in alignment with Walpole Island First Nation philosophy, policies, and procedures, while incorporating Anishinaabe values, cultural teachings, and restorative justice approaches.
Requirements:
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences or a related field from an accredited institution
Experience
- Experience working in social services, case management, or a justice-related field
- Experience working with or within a First Nations community preferred
- Experience in program development and delivery is considered an asset
Other Requirements
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable transportation
- Must provide a current Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification
- Successful completion of the prescribed Ministry Probation and Parole Officer training program upon hire
Responsibilities:
Case Management & Supervision
- Assess criminogenic risk and develop, implement, and monitor offender case management plans
- Provide individual and/or group rehabilitative interventions and ongoing case management services
- Maintain regular contact with clients to support compliance, rehabilitation, and reintegration
- Coordinate referrals and access to appropriate community resources and supports
Court & Parole Responsibilities
- Prepare reports ordered by the courts (e.g., Pre-Sentence Reports) and Ontario Board of Parole (e.g., Parole Progress Reports)
- Attend court and parole-related proceedings as required
- Monitor and enforce compliance with probation orders, conditional sentence orders, and parole conditions
- Identify violations and initiate or recommend appropriate enforcement actions
Community-Based Corrections & Programming
- Solicit and coordinate placements for Community Service Orders within the First Nation
- Support offenders in rebuilding relationships and trust within the community
- Participate in the development, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of community corrections initiatives
- Assist in the development and delivery of in-house programming
Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Liaise with Walpole Island First Nation programs and services to promote referrals and coordinated care
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with justice partners, community agencies, and collateral contacts
- Conduct home and community visits/investigations to support rehabilitation and ensure public safety
- Contact victims, where required, to promote safety and ensure compliance with legal obligations
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files, documentation, and statistics in accordance with Ministry and WIFN standards
- Ensure compliance with all administrative, reporting, and documentation requirements
- Prepare and submit reports and documentation within established timelines
