Automation Technician
(Machine Builder / Industrial Electrician)
Job Summary
The Automation Technician is responsible for the mechanical assembly, electrical installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and servicing of custom automation systems and robotic equipment. This position plays a key role in building high-quality automation solutions by interpreting engineering drawings, assembling mechanical and electrical components, supporting machine startups, and providing customer installation and service support both in-house and at customer facilities.
The successful candidate is a versatile tradesperson with strong mechanical and electrical aptitude who thrives in a fast-paced custom manufacturing environment.
Here’s what a typical day looks like!
Mechanical Assembly & Machine Build

Assemble custom automation equipment, robotic systems, tooling, fixtures, and subassemblies in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards.

Plan and execute machine assembly using engineering documentation, bills of materials, and trade knowledge.

Drill, tap, ream, machine, modify, and fit mechanical components as required.

Perform precision machine alignment, adjustments, and final fitting.

Verify machine functionality and ensure equipment meets customer specifications prior to shipment.

Perform mechanical troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance on automation equipment.
Electrical Assembly & Wiring

Assemble and wire industrial control panels and machine electrical systems.

Install motors, sensors, field devices, safety circuits, control components, and associated wiring.

Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.

Perform electrical testing, verification, and troubleshooting prior to machine startup.

Ensure all electrical work complies with applicable electrical codes, safety standards, and company procedures.
Commissioning & Customer Support

Support machine installation, commissioning, startup, and validation activities both in-house and at customer facilities.

Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation issues during machine startup.

Assist with robot integration, including jogging robots, recovering from faults, teaching positions, and verifying robot motion.

Respond to customer service requests and support equipment repairs, upgrades, and emergency breakdowns.

Complete service reports and maintain accurate documentation following installation or service activities.

Follow all Company Health & Safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to maintaining high standards of workmanship and product quality.

Perform all work in accordance with customer specifications and company quality standards.
Education & Experience
-
Completion of a recognized Industrial Electrician apprenticeship, Electrical Engineering Technician program, Mechanical Technician program, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of 3–5 years of experience building custom automation equipment, special purpose machinery, or related manufacturing equipment.

Experience with machine commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer installations.

Experience in a manufacturing or automation environment is preferred.
-
Experience with industrial robotics is considered an asset.
Knowledge & Skills

Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in precision machine assembly and alignment.

Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams, and hydraulic prints.

Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems, machine safety circuits, sensors, motors, and controls.

Experience troubleshooting mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex equipment issues.

Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Proficient with Microsoft Office and basic computer applications.

Commitment to quality workmanship, safety, and continuous improvement.
Additional Requirements

Valid Ontario Driver's Licence.

Valid passport or ability to obtain one.

Ability to travel within Canada, the United States, and internationally as required.

Forklift and overhead crane certification considered an asset.
