The Town of Gander is currently accepting applications for a Temporary Seasonal Carpenter position within the Planning and Public Works Department.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Carpenters construct, erect, install, maintain and repair structures and components of structures made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements; Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools; Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials; Installation, plastering and painting of drywall products; Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems; Fit and install trim items, such as doors, stairs, molding and hardware; Maintain, repair and renovate wooden structures belonging to the municipality; Completes framing and placement of cement to repair basins, sidewalks, curbs, foundations, and similar structures; May prepare cost estimates; Other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including ability to lift 50 lbs (22Kgs); Hazards associated with the trade; Working indoors and outdoors in all types of weather; Subject to call in or to remain on the job for emergencies; Work with and control pedestrian and vehicle traffic; Exposed to elements such as noise, dust, odors, fumes and oils; Physical dexterity required includes but is not limited to walking, bending, kneeling and lifting; Manual dexterity required to operate equipment and tools; Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, coordinate / plan work and function as part of a team; Exceptional customer service skills with a strong sense of public service and cooperation, and well-developed abilities to deal with the public and citizens’ groups; Exposed to elements such as noise, dust, odors, fumes and oils.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Completion of high school or equivalent; College or industry carpentry courses with a minimum of 2 years’ experience; Valid Class 5 driver’s license, driver’s abstract is required; Standard First Aid / CPR Certification; Experience operating power tools and hand tools; Clear certificates of conduct including a RCMP Criminal Record Check and a Provincial Court Check, is a condition of employment.
SALARY: Unionized position, 40 hours/week - $64,189 - $68,203
