Be the champion for inclusion this season! BGC Central Vancouver Island is seeking an empathetic, skilled, and dedicated Early Years Support Worker (EYSW) to join our team in Nanaimo. In this role, you will use your knowledge of child development and positive behavior support to help children with unique needs fully integrate, play, and thrive alongside their peers.
Wage: $21.00 per hour
Hours: Full-Time Contract (35 hours per week for 5 weeks), Monday – Friday.
Schedule: Shifts scheduled between 7:00 am – 5:30 pm.
Location: Nanaimo, BC.
Position Note: This rewarding role is open for a 5-week term, funded in partnership with the Child Development Centre (CDC).
As an EYSW, your mission is inclusion. You will support the early learning program as a whole while providing direct, individualized care and predictable structure for children navigating developmental delays, behavioral challenges, or extra support needs. You are the bridge that helps every child build social skills, communication strategies, and life skills in a safe environment.
Individualized Support: Provide tailored guidance in life skills, social skills, and behavior management. This may include creating visual tools or using approved technology to support communication.
Collaborative Planning: Participate in the assessment, goal setting, and documentation of individualized Care Plans, partnering with families, staff, and community networks.
Safety & Stabilization: Create a predictable structure with clear expectations. Recognize and safely de-escalate complex or anxious behavioral situations with empathy and strategy.
Holistic Care: Attend to the physical, emotional, and medical needs of the children, including administering medication according to policy, and assisting with lifts and transfers if required.
Team Collaboration: Contribute to team effectiveness through direct communication, attending staff meetings, and maintaining open lines of communication with community partners and professionals.
Education: ECEA Diploma, Community Support Worker Certificate, or Behavioral Interventionist (BI) certification is preferred (a combination of education and experience will be considered).
Safety: Valid First Aid/CPR certificate approved by Community Care Facilities Licensing.
Experience: Previous experience working in a licensed childcare facility with children who require extra support needs is a major asset.
Core Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of early child development, age-appropriate communication, and positive behavior management theory.
